I Waited In The Afternoon Carpool Line Until I Found My Son's Prescribed Breathing Machine Abandoned On The Locker Room Floor
The middle school pickup lane had been empty for fifteen minutes. I sat in my idling sedan, watching the gymnasium’s heavy double doors. Leo never stayed late. With his lung capacity, he barely made it through the standard school day.
CHAPTER 1: The Frayed Canvas
We had a strict routine. Every afternoon at 2:55 PM, Leo would text me a single thumbs-up emoji from his final period. At 3:05 PM, he would walk out of those double glass doors, moving at his careful, measured pace, and climb into the passenger seat. Today, my phone screen was blank, and the concrete walkway remained completely empty.
I turned off the ignition and stepped into the humid October air. The campus was quiet, the buses long gone, leaving only the distant hum of the cafeteria's industrial exhaust fans. I walked up the concrete steps and pulled open the right-side gym door. It was unlocked, the lobby lights already switched to half-power for the evening.
"Leo?" I called out. My voice bounced off the polished linoleum.
