Deacon turned toward the line of bikes. "Headlights high beam! Angle every lamp straight down the throat of that underpass!"
In seconds, six touring cruisers formed a semi-circle across the mouth of the tunnel, their twin LED headlamps combining into a blinding, daylight-bright tunnel of white light that pierced the gloom beneath the concrete overpass.
Inside the cavernous underpass, the scene was harrowing. The drainage channels flanking the tunnel had choked on fallen branches and gravel washed down from the ridge, turning the floor into a rushing torrent of muddy water nearly two feet deep. Pinned against the reinforced concrete support pillar on the far side lay an overturned dark-green sedan. The car had smashed through the corrugated steel guardrail, resting on its passenger side at an awkward, forty-five-degree tilt. Muddy water was already swirling past the lower window seals, pouring steadily into the crushed cabin.
Inside the wreckage, through the cracked windshield, the silhouette of a woman could be seen struggling weakly, her face pale, blood trickling from a deep gash along her hairline.
"Move! Move! Move!" Deacon shouted, charging into the tunnel, his heavy combat boots splashing through the brown current.
Tank, Hawk, and four other riders dashed behind him, carrying crowbars, a hydraulic hand jack, and heavy nylon recovery straps. The water was icy, fed by mountain runoff, surging against their shins with deceptive force.
Deacon reached the driver's door first. The metal was crumpled inward, jammed tight against the B-pillar from the impact. He cupped his hands around the shattered window frame and looked inside.
"Ma'am! Can you hear me?" Deacon shouted over the roar of the rushing water.
The woman inside groaned, blinking through blurred vision. "My daughter... where is Maya...?"
"Maya is outside! She flagged us down! She is safe, warm, and unharmed!" Deacon yelled back, his voice steady and deliberate. "She sent us in to get you! I need you to keep your head still. We're going to tear this door off and pull you out!"
Relief flooded the woman’s bruised face, and she gave a weak, trembling nod. "The water... it’s rising fast... my legs are pinned beneath the dash."
Tank slammed the flat edge of a four-foot steel pry bar into the seam between the door and the roof. "Deacon, she's wedged tight. If we pull her without popping the roof pillar, we're gonna tear the dashboard right into her knees!"
"Hawk, hook the recovery strap to the front axle of my Road King!" Deacon ordered without hesitation. "Back the bike up to the mouth of the tunnel and use the winch! We’ll pull the pillar outward to give her room!"
Hawk sprinted back through the water, unspooling the heavy high-tensile strap and wrapping it securely around the bent steel frame of the car. Within moments, the deep growl of a twin-cam engine echoed through the tunnel as the motorcycle pulled tension on the line, groaning against the asphalt as the cable snapped taut.
With a shriek of tearing metal, the bent pillar yielded two inches—just enough clearance.
"Tank, now! Leverage!" Deacon roared.
The two giant men threw their combined weight against the pry bar. Veins bulged along their forearms, sweat mixing with the cold rainwater dripping from their brows. With a deafening CRACK, the door latch snapped open, and the crumpled door swung outward, hanging by a single twisted hinge.
Deacon climbed halfway into the flooded cabin. The freezing water was already up to the woman's chest, threatening to drown her within minutes if the car shifted further down the embankment. Working by the beam of a handheld tactical flashlight held between his teeth, Deacon reached into his pocket and drew a serrated rescue hook. With one swift, practiced slash, he severed the jammed seatbelt strap that held her pinned.
"Alright, ma'am, wrap your arms around my neck," Deacon said gently, his voice calm despite the water rising around their waists. "I'm going to lift you clear of the pedals. It might hurt, but I need you to hold on to me."
"I trust you," she whispered through chattering teeth.
