The service corridor behind the double swinging doors smelled of scalded cream, lemon oil, and the dry, mineral bite of industrial dishwashers.

Robert Hale stood beneath the buzzing fluorescent tube, checking his mechanical wristwatch before tapping the crystal face twice with a manicured index finger. His silk tie was pulled a millimeter too tight, bunching the collar against his throat.

"Listen closely, everyone," Robert murmured, keeping his voice beneath the dull roar of the extraction fans. "Drop the baseline rhythm. Reset your mental posture. Tonight isn't standard rotation."

Gerald O'Bannon shifted his weight against the stainless prep counter, slowly drawing an already spotless white linen napkin across his forearm. His mouth thinned into a smirk. "The food critic from the Tribune again?"

"Worse," Robert snapped, glaring at Gerald. "Capital. Kenji Takahashi just came up the private express car. Table Nine."

A sharp silence cut through the corridor. Even the line cooks plating the cold appetizers paused their tongs. Danny Ruiz swallowed visibly, his fingers nervously working the top brass button of his service vest.

"The Tokyo logistics buyout?" Danny whispered. "The one looking at the entire restaurant group?"

"The very same," Robert said, wiping a sheen of cold sweat from his upper lip with the back of his thumb. "He holds seventy percent of our holding firm's debt bridge. If his service is delayed by ninety seconds, or if a single water glass shows water spots, we aren't just looking at bad reviews—the board will clean out the entire front of house before breakfast. He expects perfection, zero intrusion, absolute deference." Robert's gaze swept over the staff, bypassing Gerald's pointedly upright chest, and locked directly onto Amara. "Amara. Table Nine is yours."

Gerald’s jaw hardened, his napkin snapping tight in his grip. "Robert, I have twelve years on the VIP floor. Table Nine is prime station."

"And Amara has the highest guest-retention score in the building," Robert countered coldly, cutting him off without a second glance. He looked back at Amara, his pupils wide with institutional panic. "Flawless presence. No friction. Anticipate every breath."

Amara casually touched the hem of her left cuff with two fingers, her heartbeat steady at sixty beats per minute.

"He will receive exactly what he deserves, Robert," Amara said, her tone level and calm.

Before Robert could parse the phrasing, the bronze chime above the private vestibule sounded—a clear, resonant two-tone ring. Kenji Takahashi had arrived.

The bronze elevator doors parted with a muffled hiss of pressurized air.
