"Of course."
Behind him, another vehicle arrived.
Karen's SUV.
She stepped out almost immediately.
She had probably been waiting nearby.
She wanted to watch.
She wanted the moment where the police officer supposedly forced me to cooperate.
Her son Tyler stepped out behind her.
He looked excited.
Almost like he was watching a show.
Karen walked toward us.
"Officer, thank you for coming."
James nodded politely.
"Ma'am."
She pointed toward the Mustang.
"That vehicle has become a problem in our community."
James looked at the car.
Then back at her.
"Can you explain the problem?"
Karen smiled.
"Of course."
She opened a folder.
"This homeowner refuses to comply with HOA requirements."
James looked at me.
Then at her.
"Is there a law being broken?"
Karen paused.
"It's a violation."
"Of what law?"
She seemed surprised by the question.
"The HOA rules."
James nodded.
"So this is a private HOA matter?"
Karen quickly responded.
"No. It affects the community."
James remained calm.
"That doesn't answer my question."
The confidence on Karen's face started fading.
She wasn't used to people asking for details.
Usually, when she said something was a problem, people accepted it.
But James wasn't accepting anything.
He was verifying.
Karen looked frustrated.
"Officer, perhaps you don't understand the situation."
James stayed professional.
"Then please explain."
She stepped closer.
"This man has a vehicle that damages the appearance of our neighborhood."
James looked at the Mustang.
"A classic car?"
"An inappropriate vehicle."
"A vehicle legally parked on private property?"
Karen didn't answer.
Tyler stepped forward.
"Look, the point is simple."
Everyone looked at him.
"My mom runs the HOA. She has the authority."
James looked at him.
"The authority to do what?"
Tyler shrugged.
"To make decisions."
"Not all decisions."
Tyler frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means property ownership matters."
That sentence clearly bothered Karen.
Because she knew where the conversation was going.
Then Karen made the mistake that changed everything.
She pointed at me.
"Officer, this man is refusing to cooperate despite multiple warnings."
James looked at the documents.
"Multiple warnings?"
"Yes."
"Can I see them?"
Karen handed him the folder.
He opened it.
Read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
His expression didn't change.
But I knew James.
Something was bothering him.
Finally, he looked up.
"Ma'am."
"Yes?"
"Where is the board vote approving this restriction?"
Karen blinked.
"What?"
"The board vote."
She hesitated.
"This is an HOA matter."
"Correct."
"So?"
"So if the HOA changed a property rule, there should be documentation."
Karen looked uncomfortable.
"The board discussed it."
"Discussed it isn't the same as approving it."
Silence.
Tyler looked at his mother.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Karen tried another approach.
"Officer, perhaps you should speak with your supervisor."
James looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because this situation may require someone with more authority."
I almost smiled.
She had no idea how close she was.
James glanced at me.
Then back at Karen.
"I can handle a property dispute."
"No, I mean someone higher up."
She looked directly at me.
Almost challenging.
"Someone who understands community standards."
I nodded.
"Good idea."
Karen smiled.
She thought she had won.
She didn't realize she had just opened the door.
James stepped away and made a phone call.
A few minutes later, another officer arrived.
Then another.
Karen looked pleased.
More police meant more authority.
At least, that was what she believed.
Then the second officer walked toward me.
"Chief Parker."
Karen froze.
The smile disappeared.
Tyler looked confused.
"Chief?"
The officer nodded.
"Yes. Chief Parker."
The entire driveway became silent.
Karen stared at me.
Then at James.
Then back at me.
"You..."
Her voice became quieter.
"You're the police chief?"
I looked at her.
"I never hid it."
She looked angry.
"You let me believe you were just a homeowner."
"Because I am a homeowner."
James stepped beside me.
"Chief Parker has been with the department for over twenty years."
Karen's face changed.
