THE BILLIONAIRE AT BOOTH FOUR

Chapter I: The Warm Plate and the Empty Wallet

The evening rush at the Starlight Diner was dying down, leaving the lingering aroma of ground beef, brown gravy, and hot coffee drifting under the warm glow of orange pendant lamps. Outside the rain-streaked panoramic window, commuter traffic crawled along Highway 10.

Seated alone in a corner booth with faded maroon vinyl seats was an elderly man who looked as though the world had thoroughly forgotten him.

He was emaciated and frail, his face mapped with deep wrinkles and weathered soot. He wore a threadbare, torn green jacket, frayed flannel, and muddy combat boots. Trembling, dirt-stained hands opened a battered leather wallet, revealing only a single crumpled banknote and a handful of copper coins.

Approaching the booth with a warm, genuine smile was Jake.

Jake was a twenty-year-old evening waiter in a clean khaki shirt and apron. He set down a steaming, freshly prepared plate of Salisbury steak, creamy mashed potatoes with rich brown gravy, and buttered green beans right in front of the old man.

"Jake..." the old man rasped softly, his voice trembling as he looked up with sunken blue eyes. "I'm a little short today."

The man reached out, placing his meager handful of loose change and wrinkled dollar onto the laminate table.

Jake smiled gently, reached out his hand, and gently pushed the money back toward the man’s wallet.

"Keep your money," Jake said softly. "Dinner’s on me tonight."
