The first security alert reached my phone at 10:42 on a Wednesday morning.

BACKYARD MOTION DETECTED.

I was standing beside a conveyor line at the packaging plant where I had worked for eleven years.

Normally, I would have ignored it.

Squirrels triggered the backyard camera all the time.

So did neighborhood cats.

Once, a plastic grocery bag had spent twenty minutes terrorizing my security system.

Then a second alert appeared.

PATIO CAMERA OFFLINE.

That got my attention.

I stepped away from the line and opened the app.

The image froze.

Then disappeared.

A third notification arrived.

GREENHOUSE SENSOR: GLASS IMPACT.

My stomach dropped.

I called my supervisor.

“Tom, I need to go.”

He looked at my face and didn’t ask many questions.

“What happened?”

“Something at my house.”

“Go.”

I grabbed my jacket from the locker room, ran through the employee entrance, and crossed the parking lot so fast I forgot to clock out.

My name is Michael Bennett.

I’m forty-three years old.

I’m not the kind of man who gets sentimental about many possessions.

My truck is twelve years old.

My television is older.

My kitchen table has a burn mark from when my son tried to make pancakes by himself at age nine.

I kept it because the mark made me laugh.

But the greenhouse was different.

I had built it with my father.

Not bought.

Built.

We poured the small foundation ourselves.

Framed it in cedar.

Installed each glass panel by hand.

My father had been a landscaper for thirty-eight years, the kind of man who could look at a dying plant and tell you what was wrong before touching the soil.

After my mother died, gardening kept him moving.

After he got sick, it kept us talking.

He died two years after we finished the greenhouse.

By then, I had filled it with orchids, heirloom tomatoes, small citrus trees, herbs, and dozens of plants grown from cuttings he had given me.

Some were rare.

Some were valuable.

Most were valuable only to me.

I had one climbing rose grown from a cutting taken from my parents’ old house before it was sold.

That plant mattered more than everything else.

When I reached my street, I saw two police cars.

Then an ambulance.

Then half the neighborhood standing outside.

I stopped my truck in the road.

My greenhouse was gone.

Not damaged.

Gone.

The aluminum roof frame had collapsed inward.

Glass covered the lawn.

Shelving was overturned.

Planters lay shattered.

Soil and broken leaves were everywhere.

The old climbing rose had been crushed beneath one corner of the frame.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.

I just stood there staring.

Someone had not broken into my greenhouse.

Someone had destroyed it.

Deliberately.

A police officer approached.

“Michael Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Officer Dana Brooks.”

“What happened?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

I started toward the backyard.

She stepped slightly in front of me.

“Careful. There’s broken glass everywhere.”

“I need to see—”

“Mr. Bennett.”

Her voice was calm but firm.

“Before you go back there, I need to ask you a few questions.”

I looked at her.

“Questions?”

“Yes.”

“Someone destroyed my greenhouse.”

“I understand.”

“Then why are you asking me questions?”

She glanced toward another officer standing beside a patrol car.

Across the street, my neighbor Claire Dawson stood on her front lawn.

Claire wore sunglasses even though the sky was cloudy.

Her arms were folded.

She was watching me.

Not the police.

Me.

Officer Brooks lowered her voice.

“Where were you around ten-thirty this morning?”

“At work.”

“Can anyone confirm that?”

I laughed once because the question seemed absurd.

“About sixty people.”

Brooks nodded.

“That may be important.”

“What does that mean?”

She looked at me for several seconds.

Then she held out a tablet.

“We have video.”
