"Diane," I said calmly. "It's eight-thirty in the morning."
"Take this damn chain off, Evelyn!" Diane snapped, her voice trembling with rage. Her usual pristine composure was shattered; her mascara was smudged, and her hands shook violently. "You ruined my family! You ruined Derek!"
"I told Derek to pick up his beer," I said. "He chose to grab me."
"Open the door, Mrs. Vance," one of the men behind Diane spoke up. He was broad-shouldered, with a flattened nose and cauliflower ears—hallmarks of an experienced middleweight. He wore a fitted charcoal suit, but his stance was balanced on the balls of his feet. "We just want to talk about Derek’s accounts."
Ryan appeared beside me, placing his hand against the door. "Mom, who are these men? Leave our property before I call the sheriff."
"Ryan, shut your mouth!" Diane shrieked, pressing her face against the gap. "Derek was arrested two hours ago! Those thugs from the casino showed up at his office! He borrowed money against the family trust, Ryan! Against my house! If he doesn't produce five hundred thousand dollars by Friday, they are seizing my home and putting Derek in a wheelchair!"
The man with cauliflower ears smiled faintly through the opening. "Your mother-in-law is slightly dramatic, but essentially correct. My employer, Mr. Viktor Petrov, has taken over your brother-in-law's debt. But Mr. Petrov is an admirer of true athleticism. He doesn't want the old lady's house. He wants an exhibition."
I closed my eyes for a brief moment, breathing in through my nose, out through my mouth. Marcus’s warning had come to life in less than an hour.
"I retired eight years ago," I said through the door. "I don't fight for loan sharks."
"You don't fight, Derek’s legs get shattered, your mother-in-law loses her home, and..." The man stepped closer, lowering his voice just enough so only Ryan and I could hear. "...and some of our associates might wonder how well a high school biology teacher takes a hit to the jaw."
Ryan’s face flared red with indignation. He tried to unlatch the chain to lunge outward, but I caught his forearm with an unbreakable grip.
"Ryan, no," I commanded, my voice dropping into that icy register that once made world champions hesitate in the tunnel.
I looked at the man in the charcoal suit through the sliver of space.
"Tell Viktor that Derek’s debts are not my problem. If any of your men come within fifty feet of Ryan’s school, or step onto this lawn again, I won't use MMA rules. I won't wait for a referee. Tell Viktor he has twenty-four hours to set up a meeting with Marcus Kane. If we negotiate, it happens on my terms."
The man stared at me, testing the resolve in my eyes. He found nothing but granite. He slowly nodded, taking half a step back. "Wise choice, Champion."
Diane stood there, weeping in terror and fury, completely bewildered that the daughter-in-law she had treated like a doormat was now the only wall standing between her family and total destruction.
Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

By afternoon, our quiet suburban living room had transformed into a war council.
Marcus Kane arrived on a regional flight from Nevada, his leather jacket smelling of jet fuel and peppermints. He sat at our kitchen table alongside Ryan and me, reviewing financial spreadsheets that Marissa had secretly emailed us behind her mother’s back.
"Derek is dumber than a sack of wet gravel," Marcus muttered, running a thick thumb down the ledger. "He didn't just lose at blackjack. He took out private loans under Diane's signature to invest in an illegal underground fight venue outside of Aurora. Viktor owns the venue. Viktor orchestrated the whole thing to squeeze Derek dry."
"Why?" Ryan asked, rubbing his temples. "Derek is a small-time broker. Why would an international crime boss target him?"
"He didn't target Derek initially," I answered, looking out the kitchen window at the unmarked black sedan parked at the corner of our street. "Viktor targets desperate, greedy men with wealthy parents. Derek fell into the trap on his own. But the second Derek provoked me at that barbecue, and Marissa uploaded that clip, Viktor realized Derek had a golden goose tied to his family."
