My mother finally spoke.
“That’s not true.””
Everyone turned.
Her voice was shaking.
“You’re twisting everything.””
My father looked at her.
“Then explain why Natalie has the original documents.””
My mother froze.
I noticed.
A tiny reaction.
But enough.
My heart sank.
“You knew she had proof.””
My mother looked at me.
“Emma, please.””
“Please what?””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“Please let you lie again?””
She flinched.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because despite everything, some part of me still wanted her to say something that fixed it.
Something that made her the mother I remembered.
But she didn’t.
Instead, she looked at Claire.
“Tell her.””
Claire stepped back.
“Tell her what?””
My mother’s eyes filled with desperation.
“You know.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Claire.””
“No!””
My sister’s voice cracked.
“I’m tired of everyone expecting me to clean up your mess.””
The words hit the room like a slap.
My mother stared at her.
“What did you say?””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“I spent years believing Emma was the problem.””
She pointed at me.
“I thought she was the reason Dad left.””
My father lowered his eyes.
“But now I find out you lied to me too.””
My mother whispered:
“Claire…”
“No.””
Claire wiped her tears.
“You made me hate my own sister because you needed someone to blame.””
Nobody spoke.
For the first time in my life, my sister and I were standing on the same side.
Not because we had forgiven each other.
Not yet.
But because we finally saw the same enemy.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A new message.
Unknown number.
My heart stopped when I opened it.
*You found the note. Good. Now you need to find the second dress.*
I frowned.
Second dress?
Another message appeared.
*The ink was never meant to ruin your wedding. It was meant to make everyone look in the wrong direction.*
I felt a chill.
I looked at Vivian.
“What does that mean?””
She stepped closer.
“I don’t know.””
My father grabbed my arm gently.
“Emma, you need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face was serious.
“Because whoever sent that message knows more than they should.””
Another notification appeared.
This one had a picture attached.
My breath caught.
It was a photograph of my wedding dress.
Taken before it arrived at the boutique.
But someone had written something on the fabric.
A message hidden underneath the layers.
A message nobody had seen.
Except the person who put it there.
I zoomed in.
And read the words.
*YOUR MARRIAGE IS BUILT ON A LIE. ASK MARK ABOUT THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING.*
I slowly looked toward my fiancé.
Mark.
He had been quiet the entire time.
Too quiet.
And suddenly I wondered…
What had he been hiding?
The drive back to the hotel was silent.
Too silent.
Mark kept both hands on the steering wheel.
He didn’t turn on the radio.
He didn’t ask if I was okay.
He just drove.
And somehow, that scared me more.
I watched the city pass outside the window.
The same streets I had driven down hundreds of times.
But everything looked different.
Like the world had shifted slightly and I was the only person who noticed.
Finally, I spoke.
“Tell me.””
Mark tightened his grip.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“Tell me what happened the night before our wedding.””
He exhaled slowly.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
That was my answer.
I looked away.
“Mark.””
“I got a message.””
“What kind of message?””
He pulled into the hotel parking lot.
Before he turned off the engine, he looked at me.
“From Natalie.””
My heart stopped.
“You knew her?””
“No.””
“Then why did she contact you?””
He looked down.
“She sent me information about your family.””
I stared.
“What information?””
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an envelope.
“I received this yesterday.””
I took it.
Inside were photographs.
Old photographs.
My mother.
My father.
Natalie.
And another person.
Someone I didn’t recognize.
“Who is this?””
Mark hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
I looked closer.
The man was standing beside my mother.
Holding documents.
My father leaned over the table in the photo.
Something was being signed.
Mark spoke quietly.
“Natalie said this person was the one who helped your mother create the fake records.””
I looked at him.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I wanted to protect you.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe those words.
“Protect me?””
“Yes.””
“You let me walk into my wedding while knowing my family was falling apart?””
His face tightened.
“I thought I could fix it before you found out.””
I stared at him.
“Mark, you don’t fix things by hiding them from me.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
The question hurt both of us.
Because I wasn’t only angry.
I was afraid.
Everyone I loved had been making decisions for me.
Everyone thought they knew what was best.
Everyone except me.
Mark reached for my hand.
I moved away.
“I need time.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
But then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then:
“No. That’s impossible.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
He ended the call.
His face was pale.
“The police are here.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“They found something at the venue.””
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Someone broke into the wedding hall last night.””
I froze.
“But why?””
Mark looked at the envelope in my hand.
