“What if she really did take the money?””
“Then you will need to establish what happened and decide what to do based on the evidence.””
“What if I lose her?””
I thought about the years I had spent trying to protect him from the pain of his father's abandonment.
“You cannot save a relationship by refusing to look at the truth.””
He stared at the carpet.
Then he whispered, “I think Dad knew about the condo.””
“Why?””
“Because when I asked him about the payments, he said Holly had made arrangements for her future. He told me not to worry about it.””
I turned toward him.
“Did he say anything else?””
Robert nodded slowly.
“He said I should stop trying to control Holly's money.””
“Did you ask why your company was paying it?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Robert's eyes filled with tears.
“He said I was too much like you.””
I felt a coldness settle over me.
Not because the words were insulting.
Because I recognized the tactic.
Daniel had spent years making me feel unreasonable whenever I asked him to take responsibility. Now he was using the same strategy against his son.
Robert wiped his face.
“I need to talk to him.””
“Then talk to him. But don't go alone if you feel intimidated, and don't sign anything you don't understand.””
He nodded.
That night, I slept in the guest room.
At 11:30 p.m., I heard footsteps in the hallway.
Robert knocked softly on the door.
“Mom? Are you awake?””
“Yes.””
He opened the door and stood there holding an envelope.
“I found this in Holly's desk.””
I sat up.
“What is it?””
“An agreement related to the condominium.””
He handed it to me.
The document appeared to be a purchase agreement accompanied by a separate financial arrangement. I read the first page, then the second.
Holly was listed as the buyer.
But the money for the deposit had not been recorded as a gift from Robert.
It was described as a loan.
The lender's name appeared near the bottom.
Daniel Johnson.
I looked at my son.
“Your father lent Holly money?””
Robert shook his head.
“I don't think so. Look at the date.””
The agreement had been signed two weeks before the first transfer from Robert's company.
I read the document again.
Then I reached the final page.
There, beneath the signature lines, was a clause stating that the loan would be repaid from proceeds generated by the sale of an existing property.
I looked up.
“Robert, what property?””
He swallowed.
“Our house.””
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I heard a sound from downstairs.
The front door opened.
Footsteps crossed the hallway.
And Holly's voice called out, sharp and trembling.
“Robert, we need to talk. Now.””
Chapter 8: The Wife Who Had a Plan
Robert placed the agreement on the bedside table.
“Stay here, Mom.””
I stood up.
“No. If this concerns your house and your business, I'm not going to hide in a bedroom while you face it.””
He looked torn.
“I'm afraid this is going to get ugly.””
“Then keep your voice calm and your documents in front of you.””
We walked downstairs together.
Holly stood in the living room with her purse still over her shoulder. Her cheeks were flushed, and her eyes were red. She looked from Robert to me, then noticed the agreement in his hand.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your desk.””
“You had no right to go through my things!””
Robert held up the document.
“Why is there an agreement involving the sale of our house?””
Holly's expression changed.
She placed her purse on the sofa and rubbed her forehead.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“When the time was right.””
“When would that have been?””
She stared at him.
Then she turned toward me.
“This is between my husband and me.””
Robert stepped forward.
“I'm asking the questions, Holly.””
She looked startled.
Perhaps she was accustomed to him avoiding confrontation. Perhaps she expected him to apologize for making her uncomfortable.
Instead, he opened the agreement and placed it on the coffee table.
“Explain this.””
Holly sat down slowly.
“The condominium was an investment.””
“An investment you funded with money from my company?””
“It wasn't like that.””
“Then tell me what it was like.””
She pressed her hands together.
“Your father approached me months ago. He said your business was doing well, but you were too conservative with your money. He thought I should have something of my own.””
Robert stared at her.
“My father approached you separately?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Last year.””
“And you never told me?””
“I didn't want another argument about him.””
Robert laughed bitterly.
“So you hid a financial arrangement with the man who was consulting for my company.””
“He said it was perfectly normal to separate business finances from personal finances.””
“Did he tell you that money from my company could be used to buy a condominium?””
Holly looked away.
“I thought it was reimbursement for expenses.””
“What expenses?””
She swallowed.
“Household expenses. Travel. Things I paid for while you were putting money into the business.””
“Can you show me the receipts?””
“I don't have them all.””
“Why not?””
“Because I wasn't expecting to be interrogated!””
Robert's voice rose.
“I'm not interrogating you! I'm trying to understand why my company is nearly broke while money is disappearing into your personal account!””
Holly stood up.
“Don't you dare accuse me of taking advantage of you. I supported you when you started that business. I looked after Ethan while you worked late.
I hosted clients. I helped you make connections.””
“I know what you've done for our family.””
“Then stop treating me like a stranger!””
Robert fell silent.
I watched him carefully.
This was the moment when he might retreat. He might decide that the emotional cost of asking questions was too high. He might apologize simply to restore peace.
Instead, he took a breath.
“I appreciate everything you've done. But that doesn't explain these payments.””
Holly looked at him for a long time.
Then she sat down again.
“The condo was supposed to be a backup plan.””
“For what?””
She rubbed her palms against her skirt.
“Your father said your company might collapse. He told me I needed to protect Ethan.””
Robert's face drained of color.
“My company might collapse?””
“He said there were risks you weren't telling me about.””
“Did he show you financial statements?””
“Yes.””
“Which ones?””
“I don't remember.””
“Did he tell you how much debt the business had?””
She nodded.
“Did he tell you I was personally responsible for some of it?””
Another nod.
Robert stared at her.
“So you knew the company was in trouble.””
“I knew there were problems.””
“And you helped my father move money into a condominium instead of telling me?””
“I didn't move anything! The transfers were arranged through Sterling.””
“Whose account received the money?””
“Mine.””
“Who bought the condo?””
“I did.””
“Then how is this not your responsibility?””
Holly began to cry.
For a moment, I felt sorry for her. Whatever she had done, she was frightened, and I knew what fear could do to a person.
But tears could not replace answers.
She wiped her cheeks.
“I was trying to protect Ethan. If the business failed and we lost the house, I wanted somewhere we could go.””
Robert sat down opposite her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because you always believed you could fix everything yourself. You never listened when I said we were spending too much. You kept putting money into projects, and I was afraid we'd lose everything.””
“Then you should have told me you were worried.””
“I did tell you!””
“When?””
“Months ago!””
Robert looked down.
I could see the possibility that she was telling part of the truth. Perhaps she had warned him about their spending. Perhaps he had ignored her concerns because he wanted his business to succeed.
But none of that explained the secret transfers or the agreement involving their house.
He lifted his head.
“Did you intend to sell our home?””
Holly's lips trembled.
“I intended to have options.””
“Without telling me?””
“I thought you'd understand eventually.””
Robert shook his head.
“I'm trying to understand now.””
She stood up again and began pacing.
“You don't understand what it's like to live with a man who thinks every problem can be solved by working harder. You were always at the office. You missed dinners.
You missed Ethan's school events. I was the one holding everything together.””
Robert didn't interrupt.
“I wanted security,” she continued.
“I wanted something that couldn't disappear if your next project failed.””
I looked at her.
“Holly, wanting security isn't wrong. But why did you refuse to let me see Ethan on his birthday?””
She turned toward me.
“Please don't start.””
“I am asking you a question.””
“You have nothing to do with this.””
“I had nothing to do with the condo, either. Yet your husband was calling me at two in the morning asking for money to protect the life you were secretly trying to escape.””
Her eyes filled again.
“You don't know what happened in this house.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked at Robert.
He waited.
Finally, she whispered, “Your father said if we didn't act quickly, the business would drag us all down.””
Robert leaned forward.
“What exactly did he promise you?””
Holly hesitated.
“He said he could arrange the condo purchase and help us sell the house before creditors became a problem.””
Robert stared at her.
“Creditors?””
“He said it would be easier to protect the money if we moved it before the business situation got worse.””
