I swallowed hard.
That is why I have worked to protect what I am leaving you.
If someone ever tells you that you are selfish for wanting to preserve your future, ask yourself why they need you to surrender it.
Tears blurred the page.
I continued reading.
Your father knows that I have created a trust for you. He has promised to protect it. I trust him to do so, not because he is perfect, but because he has always tried to do what is right for you.
If you ever discover that someone has attempted to change these arrangements without permission, do not assume that the person is acting out of love.
Ask questions. Keep records. Find people who will tell you the truth even when it is uncomfortable.
At the bottom was one final paragraph.
And Maya, if you ever meet someone who insists that family means you must accept every hurt in silence, remember this: family should be the place where you are safest, not the place where you must fight hardest to protect yourself.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
For a moment, the conference room disappeared.
I could almost hear my mother's voice reading the words aloud.
Dad placed his hand on my shoulder.
“She would be proud of you.””
I wiped my cheeks.
“I wish she were here.””
“So do I, sweetheart.””
Rebecca waited until I had finished reading before continuing.
“There is one more detail you should know.””
She turned to Patricia.
“When Denise made the second request to alter the trust, she included a document claiming that Elena had appointed a successor trustee.””
Patricia examined the copy.
“Who was named?””
Rebecca pointed to the relevant line.
The name was Denise Bennett.
Dad stood abruptly.
“She tried to make herself the trustee?””
“Yes,” Rebecca said.
“The request was rejected because the document was invalid.””
Patricia read the page again.
Then she looked at the property transfer.
“Marcus, the company that now claims ownership of Denise's property appears to have been created shortly after the second trust request.””
Dad stared at the registration date.
It was exactly six weeks later.
The company had been established using an address associated with Robert Bennett's former business office.
Patricia made a note.
“Robert may have additional information about the company's formation.””
Dad's expression darkened.
“I'll ask him.””
Rebecca gathered her documents.
Before leaving, she looked at me.
“Your mother took extraordinary care to protect you. These records suggest someone repeatedly attempted to interfere with those protections. The important thing now is to let the evidence speak.””
I nodded.
For the first time since the car incident, I felt something other than helplessness.
I still didn't know whether we'd recover the money.
I didn't know what would happen to Denise, or whether the house would remain ours.
But I knew my mother had not left me defenseless.
Her records had survived.
Her instructions had survived.
And the truth was beginning to emerge.
That evening, Dad and I returned home with copies of the trust documents.
Jordan was waiting in the living room.
He looked up when we entered.
“Did you find anything?””
Dad placed the folder on the coffee table.
“Enough to understand that this has been going on longer than we realized.””
Jordan sat forward.
“Mom called me.””
I stopped.
“When?””
“About twenty minutes ago.””
Dad's expression hardened.
“What did she want?””
Jordan hesitated.
“She said she knows about the bank investigation. She said if I tell anyone else what I know, I'll be responsible for destroying her life.””
I stared at him.
“Did she threaten you?””
“Not directly.””
He looked down at his phone.
“She also said I should come to the new house tomorrow morning.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Why?””
“She said she wants to show me something. Something that will prove she didn't steal anything.””
I exchanged a glance with Dad.
“Did she tell you what it was?””
Jordan shook his head.
“No. But she said Uncle Robert would be there.””
Dad took a slow breath.
“Don't go alone.””
Jordan nodded.
Then he handed Dad his phone.
“There was one more message.””
The text was brief.
Bring the original trust documents. If Marcus refuses, tell him I know what Elena really intended when she created the trust.
I felt my heart stop.
Dad read the message twice.
Then he looked at me.
“What does she mean by that?””
I clutched my mother's letter.
For the first time, I wondered whether Denise had discovered something in my mother's past that none of us knew.
Something she believed could change everything.
And she was willing to use it to make my father surrender.
“Tell him I know what Elena really intended when she created the trust.””
Denise's message stayed on my father's phone long after he stopped reading it.
Dad stood beside the coffee table, one hand resting on the folder containing my mother's original trust documents. Jordan sat across from him, pale and restless, while I held Mom's letter against my chest.
For years, Denise had made me feel as though I was the unwanted person in my own home.
Now she was threatening to rewrite my mother's intentions, too.
Dad finally broke the silence.
“We're not meeting her without Patricia.””
Jordan nodded quickly.
“She said she'd be at the property at ten tomorrow morning.””
“Then Patricia can arrange the meeting,” Dad replied.
“And nobody signs anything.””
I looked at him.
“What if Denise really does know something about Mom?””
His expression softened.
“Then we'll hear it. But we won't let her use it to frighten us into making a decision.””
That night, I placed my mother's letter beside my bed.
I read it three times.
Each time, the same sentence stayed with me.
If someone ever tells you that you are selfish for wanting to preserve your future, ask yourself why they need you to surrender it.
I had spent years trying to earn Denise's approval.
I cleaned the kitchen because she complained about messes. I stayed quiet because she accused me of being disrespectful. I worked extra shifts because I didn't want to ask Dad for money.
Whenever she treated Jordan better than me, I told myself that being patient would eventually make things fair.
But fairness had never been her goal.
Control had.
And now that Dad had discovered the truth, Denise was reaching for the one thing she had always used against us.
Fear.
The following morning, Patricia arrived at our house shortly after eight.
She carried a briefcase and a thick stack of documents.
“I've arranged for the meeting to take place at my office,” she said.
“If Denise refuses, we won't follow her anywhere. The disputed property records are being reviewed, and I've instructed my office to preserve every relevant communication.””
Dad nodded.
“What about the trust?””
“Rebecca has provided the original agreement and the records showing the rejected requests. We're also requesting an independent review of the documents submitted in the property transfer.””
Patricia turned to Jordan.
“Your mother asked you to bring the original trust documents. Do not give her anything. You can tell her the originals are being held securely.””
Jordan swallowed.
“She'll be furious.””
Patricia gave him a steady look.
“She may be. But her reaction is not your responsibility.””
At 9:17 a.m., Denise called.
Dad put the phone on speaker.
“Marcus,” she said, her voice unusually sweet.
“I've been thinking about everything that's happened.””
Dad remained silent.
“I know you're upset. I know Maya has been filling your head with accusations.””
My jaw tightened.
Patricia raised one finger, silently telling me not to interrupt.
Dad answered calmly.
“Maya hasn't needed to fill my head with anything. The documents speak for themselves.””
Denise gave a short laugh.
“Documents can be misunderstood.””
“Then you can explain them to Patricia.””
A pause followed.
“I don't want lawyers involved in a family matter.””
“It's a little late for that.””
Her tone sharpened.
“Marcus, if you bring an attorney into this, things will become much uglier than they need to be.””
Dad looked at Patricia.
“Are you threatening me?””
“I'm trying to protect this family.””
“Then tell me why you used money from Maya's college account without permission.””
Silence.
Dad continued.
“Tell me why someone forged my signature. Tell me why my dead wife's name appears on documents she couldn't have signed. And tell me why you attempted to access a trust that was established specifically for my daughter.””
Denise's breathing became audible through the speaker.
“You don't understand what Elena wanted.””
“Then explain it.””
“I will. But not in front of Maya.””
I leaned toward the phone.
“Why not?””
Denise paused.
“Maya, this is an adult conversation.””
“I'm the person whose future you tried to take. I think I belong in it.””
Jordan looked at me.
For once, he didn't laugh.
Denise's voice dropped.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
“Then show me the evidence.””
Another silence.
Finally, Denise said, “Fine. Ten thirty. Patricia's office.””
She disconnected.
Patricia closed her briefcase.
“That was interesting.””
Dad frowned.
“What was?””
“She threatened consequences if you involved a lawyer, then agreed to meet your lawyer as soon as you refused to negotiate privately.””
