Security moved closer.

Daniel pointed toward the hallway.

“Leave.”

Linda stared at her son for a long time.

Then she whispered, “You’ll regret this.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. I regret every time I asked my wife to tolerate you.”

Security escorted her out.

The door closed.

Daniel stood there.

He did not move.

I said his name.

He turned.

Then he covered his face with both hands and began to cry.

Not quietly.

Not politely.

It was the kind of crying I had never seen from him.

Deep.

Embarrassed.

Almost childlike.

I reached out.

He came to the bed and carefully took my hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“Daniel.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“Look at me.”

He did.

“You stopped her.”

“Too late.”

“You stopped her.”

“I should have stopped her nine years ago.”

That night, after the nurses dimmed the lights, Daniel told me things he had never said out loud.

How Linda had controlled his father’s medication after he became ill.

How she chose which friends could visit.

How she had read Daniel’s text messages when he was in college.

How every disagreement ended with her reminding him that she had “given up her entire life” after his father died.

“I thought that was love,” he whispered.

I watched the glow from the monitor reflect against his face.

“What do you think it was?”

He stared at our joined hands.

“Fear.”

The next morning, Megan called.

Her voice shook.

“I heard what Mom did.”

Daniel stiffened.

“You shouldn’t be dealing with this on your honeymoon.”

“I’m not going anywhere yet.”

“What?”

“We canceled the flight.”

“Megan—”

“Daniel, she came to my room after the reception.”

He sat straighter.

“What happened?”

There was a pause.

“She said you’d chosen Claire over us.”

“I chose my wife over leaving her alone after emergency surgery.”

“I know.”

Another pause.

Then Megan said something neither of us expected.

“She told me Dad would be ashamed of you.”

Daniel’s face drained of color.

Megan continued.

“And I told her Dad would have stayed at the hospital too.”

Silence.

Then she whispered, “She slapped me.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

I could hear Megan crying through the phone.

“She slapped me in my wedding dress.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

I felt sick for reasons that had nothing to do with surgery.

That afternoon, Megan arrived at the hospital.

Still wearing her wedding manicure.

Still carrying a tiny satin purse because she said she had not unpacked anything yet.

A faint red mark remained along her cheek.

When she saw me, she burst into tears.

“I’m sorry.”

I shook my head.

“For what?”

“For all of it.”

She sat beside me.

“For thinking Mom just didn’t like you. For letting her talk about you. For laughing sometimes because it was easier than confronting her.”

Daniel stared at his sister.

“Megan…”
