“Mr. Whitmore told them Mr. Cole had the diamond.”

Gregory turned.

“Emily.”

She flinched.

Charlotte saw that too.

Her voice became colder.

“Do not address her like that.”

Gregory stopped.

Then Charlotte noticed the sapphire necklace still resting inside the viewing case.

She looked at Adrian.

“The Kessler sapphire?”

“That was the idea.”

For the first time, Kane seemed to realize the relationship between the people in front of him was not ordinary.

Charlotte turned toward Gregory.

“Do you know who this man is?”

Adrian’s expression changed immediately.

“Charlotte.”

She looked at him.

“Don't.”

He shook his head.

“My name doesn’t fix this.”

Charlotte understood.

Kane did not.

Gregory certainly did not.

Charlotte took one breath.

Then said, “Fine.”

She turned toward Gregory.

“Did his client file verify?”

Gregory did not answer.

Emily did.

“Yes.”

“Was the appointment confirmed?”

“Yes.”

“Was proof of funds completed?”

“Yes.”

“Was he authorized for the private collection?”

“Yes.”

Charlotte looked at Gregory.

“What did you check before calling police?”

Silence.

Adrian watched.

This was the question that mattered.

Not his résumé.

Not his money.

Not the photograph that might appear in tomorrow’s business pages.

What had Gregory actually checked?

Nothing important.

Charlotte asked again.

“Gregory.”

“I saw an unfamiliar customer inside the private salon. Emily told me a loose diamond wasn't where she expected it to be.”

Emily spoke quietly.

“I told you I was moving it to grading.”

Gregory looked toward her.

“You said that afterward.”

“No.”

She pointed toward the ceiling camera.

“It has audio.”

Silence.

Charlotte’s jaw tightened.

“Preserve everything.”

Gregory looked alarmed.

“Charlotte—”

“Security footage. Point-of-sale records. appointment notes. Vault logs. Internal messages. The call to 911.”

Kane looked toward Torres.

Adrian noticed.

Charlotte finally turned to him.

“Do you want medical attention?”

“No.”

“Your wrists?”

“Bruised.”

“Anything else?”

“My glasses are under a cabinet.”

One of the men accompanying Charlotte retrieved them.

Adrian cleaned the lenses with a handkerchief.

Only then did Gregory ask the question.

“Mr. Cole… who exactly are you?”

Adrian looked at him.

“The customer you accused of stealing.”

Gregory swallowed.

Charlotte closed her eyes briefly.

Then, perhaps because half the store already had phones pointed at them, she answered with more restraint than anger.

“Adrian Cole is founder and chief executive of Cole Meridian Industries.”

Gregory stared.

The name landed.

Cole Meridian.

One of the largest privately controlled logistics, energy infrastructure, and data-center companies in the United States.

Thirty-two countries.

More than eighty thousand employees.

A private valuation that had crossed sixty billion dollars after its latest infrastructure acquisition.

Adrian personally held just under a fifth of it, alongside stakes in renewable energy, commercial property, biotechnology, and several investment funds.

Estimated personal fortune:

$11.8 billion.

Gregory’s face drained.

Kane looked at Adrian again.

Not as a suspected thief now.

As though the same man had suddenly become physically different.

Adrian noticed.

He always noticed.

Gregory’s voice softened instantly.

“Mr. Cole, I truly had no idea.”

Adrian gave him a tired look.

“That sentence is becoming very popular today.”

“I mean if I had known who you were—”

“Stop.”

Gregory did.

Adrian looked toward the sales floor.

“You had my name.”

“Yes.”

“My identification.”

“Yes.”

“My appointment.”

“Yes.”

“Proof of funds.”

“Yes.”

“A staff member telling you the diamond had been moved.”

Gregory lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“And cameras.”

“Yes.”

Adrian paused.

“What additional fact did my net worth provide?”

Gregory could not answer.

Adrian looked toward Officer Kane.
