“Possibly the same people who monitored mine.”

Claire studied him.

“You could have contacted me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Eighteen months ago.”

Claire felt something shift.

“I never received anything.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because the messages I sent were intercepted internally.”

“That is a serious allegation.”

“Yes.”

“So is everything in that envelope.”

The seatbelt sign remained on.

Claire could not cross the aisle during descent without drawing attention.

Daniel pushed the envelope farther toward her.

A flight attendant approached.

He immediately leaned back.

Claire realized he was frightened.

Not dramatic fear.

The contained vigilance of someone who had been living with consequences for a long time.

After the attendant passed, Claire said, “Why are you here?”

“Because I heard you were finally conducting anonymous service inspections.”

“Who told you?”

“Someone in your executive office.”

“Name.”

“Not yet.”

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“You came onto my aircraft, photographed me without permission, sent anonymous threats—”

“Warnings.”

“Threats from my perspective.”

Daniel nodded.

“Fair.”

“And now you refuse to identify your source?”

“Until you read the documents.”

The landing gear lowered.

Claire heard it beneath the cabin floor.

“We are running out of time.”

Daniel replied, “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you for eighteen months.”

The aircraft landed twelve minutes later.

Passengers applauded lightly when the wheels touched down.

Claire stayed seated while Flight 318 taxied toward the gate.

Richard was quiet.

Susan looked exhausted.

The ordinary passengers around them had no idea that the seat dispute they witnessed had uncovered something far larger.

When the seatbelt sign switched off, phones illuminated throughout the cabin.

Claire crossed immediately to 2C.

Daniel handed her the envelope.

“Do not open it here.”

“Why?”

“Because if I’m right, the company’s cybersecurity team may already be working for the wrong people.”

Claire stared at him.

“Come with me.”

“I can’t.”

“You absolutely can.”

Daniel shook his head.

“They know who I am. They don’t know I’m talking to you.”

“They will after cabin cameras are reviewed.”

“That is why you ordered the records preserved.”

Claire understood.

Daniel had used her own investigation to ensure evidence of their meeting could not be erased.

“You planned this.”

“I hoped Richard Caldwell would expose the service-bias system.”

Claire looked sharply at him.

“You knew he was in 3C?”

“Yes.”

“You knew he might take 1A?”

“No.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“That part was Richard being Richard.”

Despite everything, Claire nearly smiled.

It vanished quickly.

“Why Flight 318?”

“Because Paxon executives were supposed to be on this route.”

“Where?”

“They changed flights yesterday.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire looked at the envelope.

“What is in here?”

“The reason I left Meridian.”

David appeared at the aircraft doorway.

He looked relieved to see Claire.

Then he recognized Daniel.

His face changed.

“Daniel?”

Daniel nodded.

“David.”

Claire said, “We need a secure conference room.”

David looked between them.

“I have one ready.”

Richard approached from behind.

“I assume I’m free to leave.”

Claire turned.

“You are a passenger, not a prisoner.”

Richard looked at Daniel.

Recognition flickered.

“You.”

Daniel’s expression became cold.

“You remember me.”

Richard said nothing.

Claire looked between them.

“You two know each other.”

Daniel replied, “We met once.”

Richard tightened his grip on his briefcase.

“It was years ago.”

“Eighteen months,” Daniel said.

Claire felt the pieces rearrange.

“What happened?”

Richard shook his head.

“Nothing relevant.”

Daniel laughed without humor.

“You testified to Meridian’s audit committee that Paxon’s passenger-value system was only being used for marketing.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“That was accurate at the time.”

“No, it wasn’t.”

Claire stepped between them verbally.

“Stop.”

Both men looked at her.

“We are not doing this in an aircraft doorway.”

She faced Richard.

“You’re coming with us.”

Richard immediately objected.

“You just said I was free to leave.”

“You are. I’m asking you to join a voluntary internal review.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Then I will proceed without your explanation.”

Richard hesitated.

Claire added, “Which means Daniel’s account will be the only one in the room.”

That worked.

Richard followed.

Susan remained behind to complete cabin duties.

Claire stopped beside her.

“David will arrange an interview after your postflight responsibilities.”

Susan nodded.

“Am I suspended?”

“Yes, pending review.”

Her eyes filled.

Claire did not soften the decision.

But she did say, “Suspension is not a finding.”

Susan swallowed.

“Thank you.”

Claire continued toward the terminal.

Ten minutes later, she sat in a restricted airport conference room with David, Daniel, Richard, and Meridian’s outside legal counsel connected through encrypted video.

The envelope lay on the table.

Claire opened it.

Inside were paper copies.

Daniel had deliberately avoided electronic records.

The first document was a project outline.

MERIDIAN SELECT.

The stated objective sounded harmless:

Enhanced retention through personalized conflict-resolution strategy.

Claire turned the page.

There were passenger categories.

HIGH VALUE / HIGH ESCALATION.

HIGH VALUE / LOW ESCALATION.

LOW VALUE / HIGH ESCALATION.

LOW VALUE / LOW ESCALATION.

Then recommended responses.

Upgrades.

Compensation.

Priority rebooking.

And one category Claire read twice.

Burden-transfer opportunity.

She looked at Daniel.

“What does this mean?”

“You already experienced it.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Daniel pointed.

“If a high-value passenger wants something that conflicts with a lower-value passenger, the model identifies which passenger creates less financial risk if disappointed.”

Richard leaned back.
