"You did well today."

Daniel sat across from him.

"Thank you."

Thomas opened a drawer.

"I've been thinking about something."

Daniel waited.

"We're opening a new Sterling Motors location next year."

Daniel's eyes widened.

Thomas continued.

"It will need a sales manager."

Daniel's heart began beating faster.

"Mr. Bennett, I—"

Thomas raised a hand.

"I'm not offering you the position."

Daniel stopped.

Thomas smiled slightly.

"Not yet."

Daniel laughed despite himself.

"Fair enough."

"You have the ability. You understand the business. But leadership isn't about being the loudest person in the room."

Thomas leaned forward.

"It's about making sure the quietest person is treated as if they matter."

Daniel nodded.

He understood.

When he left the office, he walked past the black Aurelia.

It was no longer the most important thing in the showroom.

Not to him.

The people walking around it were.

One month later, Sterling Motors hosted its annual private event.

The showroom was decorated with flowers, lights, and banners. Invitations had been sent to some of the dealership's most valuable clients.

Daniel was responsible for coordinating the sales team.

It was his first major leadership assignment.

Everything went smoothly until a man entered through the front doors without an invitation.

He was thin, unshaven, and dressed in a faded sweatshirt.

One of the younger salesmen immediately approached Daniel.

"Should I call security?"

Daniel looked toward the man.

"Why?"

"He doesn't look like he's here for the event."

Daniel felt an old memory return.

A worn jacket.

Faded jeans.

A hand resting on a black car.

Daniel looked at the young salesman.

"Did you ask him?"

The salesman hesitated.

"No."

"Then ask."

The salesman approached the man.

A few minutes later, Daniel joined them.

The stranger was looking at an electric luxury SUV.

"Good evening," Daniel said. "I'm Daniel. Is there anything I can help you with?"

The man looked nervous.

"I know this is probably a bad time."

"There's no bad time to ask a question."

The man smiled weakly.

"I work as a mechanic."

Daniel nodded.

"Then you probably know more about engines than I do."

The man laughed.

They began talking.

His name was Raymond.

He had spent twenty-five years working in an independent repair shop. He was fascinated by the new electric technology but had never been inside a luxury dealership before.

"I always wondered what it was like," he admitted.

Daniel showed him the vehicle.

He explained the engineering and invited Raymond to sit inside.

For nearly forty minutes, they talked.

Eventually, Raymond thanked him.

"I can't afford one of these," he said.

Daniel smiled.

"You didn't have to."

Raymond looked confused.

"You came in because you were interested. That was enough."

From across the showroom, Thomas watched.

After Raymond left, Thomas approached Daniel.

"You remember."

Daniel nodded.

"Every day."

Thomas looked toward the door.

"Good."

Then he handed Daniel an envelope.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was an official company document.

He looked up.

Thomas smiled.

"Congratulations."

Daniel read the first line again.

Regional Sales Leadership Development Program.

He had been selected.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

"You were testing me."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"Then what was all this?"

Thomas looked around the crowded showroom.

"Life."

Daniel smiled.

Thomas was right.

The lesson had never really been about one day or one old man.

It was about every day after that.

Daniel's promotion brought new responsibilities.

He began training younger employees.

At first, he focused on sales techniques.
