Twenty-seven violation notices had been issued in eighteen months.
Nineteen had been disputed.
Sixteen had no independent evidence.
Three families had eventually moved away after months of repeated penalties.
An elderly man stood.
"I was fined because my fence was two inches too tall."
Eleanor looked through the records.
"Do you know the house across from you?"
"Yes."
"Their fence is three inches too tall."
The man stared at her.
"They were never fined."
More residents began speaking.
One described unexplained fees.
Another described surveillance cameras pointed toward private yards.
A third said Patricia had once threatened to make it impossible for him to sell his home.
The room was changing.
Patricia could feel it.
Eleanor placed a document on the table.
"Motion to remove Patricia Hale as HOA president."
Patricia stood.
"I refuse."
Eleanor calmly answered.
"You don’t get to refuse a vote."
The vote was taken.
Six in favor.
One against.
The only opposing vote was Patricia’s.
Nobody celebrated.
Nobody insulted her.
The room simply went quiet as the power she had held for years disappeared in a single moment.
Patricia gathered her papers.
Before leaving, she looked at Daniel.
"You won."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"What else do you want?"
"Nothing."
She frowned.
"I just want to live in my house without asking permission."
Patricia walked out.
Detective Henderson followed to complete the legal paperwork.
Raymond Cole was charged with trespassing and property damage.
The investigation into the HOA’s finances continued.
The $1,200 payment was no longer just a suspicious line in a spreadsheet.
It was evidence.
Daniel returned home close to midnight.
Marcus called.
