“Easy?” Mack snapped. “She walked here on that leg.”

Doc didn’t look up. “And if you storm out there now, they’ll hide whatever else they’ve done before the sheriff ever gets moving.”

Mack knew he was right.

That was the worst part.

**In Maple Ridge, men like Daniel Whitmore didn’t panic. They prepared. They called friends. They adjusted stories. They turned bruises into accidents and fear into misunderstandings.**

Mack knelt beside Ellie again. “How did you get here?”

She swallowed.

“I heard Mama say nobody goes to the garage because they’re scary. She said scary people are sometimes the only ones who don’t lie.”

Mack froze.

“Your mama said that?”

A tiny nod.

“Where’s your mama now?”

Ellie’s face crumpled for the first time. “She fell down the stairs again.”

Again.

The word landed like a hammer.

Mack turned to Rooster. “Call Doc Bennett at county. Not the local clinic. County. Tell him we need an ambulance and mandatory reporting. And call Sheriff Lane directly—on his cell, not dispatch.”

Rooster moved immediately.

Maple Ridge’s local channels were too compromised for trust.

While they waited, Mack sat with Ellie and let her hold two of his fingers. They looked absurd in her tiny hand. She seemed to need the anchor anyway.

“Did your daddy do this today?” he asked.

Her answer came like she was reciting weather.

“He got mad because I dropped the pie dish. Then Mr. Pritchard came over and Daddy smiled like normal. After Mr. Pritchard left, Daddy said I embarrassed him.”

Mack’s vision blurred red at the edges.

“Did he hit your mama too?”

Ellie’s silence was answer enough.

Then she whispered, “Mama told me if I ever got really scared, go where people don’t care about being invited.”

A rough laugh escaped Mack before he could stop it. It sounded too close to grief.

“That sounds like your mama’s smart.”
