Richard Miller tried to salvage the moment before Marcus could speak. Wiping the sweat from his upper lip with the back of his hand, Richard hurried forward a few steps, paste-on smile stretched tight across his face, and extended his right hand toward Eleanor Sterling.

"Mrs. Sterling, welcome back to the property," Richard said, his voice overly loud and strained. "We were just clearing up a minor computer glitch at the main terminal before escorting our guests upstairs—"

Eleanor Sterling didn't even look at Richard’s outstretched hand.

She walked straight past him, her silver hair gleaming under the crystal chandeliers, and stopped directly in front of the tall white man in the charcoal sweater. Her stern expression softened into a warm, genuine smile as she reached out with both hands to clasp Marcus’s forearm.

"Marcus," Eleanor said clearly, her voice carrying across the hushed marble lobby. "Thank you for coming to the hotel yourself today. Every member of our board knows that any other private equity chairman in New York would have let the banks tear my father’s building down. Having Vance Global take over the deed means the world to my family."

Three feet away, the woman in the fur-trimmed coat slowly lowered her sunglasses, her face flushing crimson as she realized the man she had whispered about was the new owner of the entire building.

Richard’s hand hung frozen in mid-air before dropping limply to his side. Behind the black marble counter, Brittany gripped the edge of the stone so hard her knuckles turned white.

"I appreciate that, Eleanor," Marcus said warmly, inclining his head in respect.

Eleanor glanced around the empty space beside Marcus, a small crease forming between her brows as she looked at Arthur Pendelton and then at the front desk.

"Where is your luggage, Marcus?" Eleanor asked. "I instructed the board secretary to place an executive hold on the Presidential Suite at seven this morning so we could sign the closing documents on the penthouse terrace at four o'clock. Why are we standing at the main check-in counter?"

The lobby went dead silent. Even the faint clinking of coffee cups from the lobby bar seemed to stop.

Marcus didn't point a finger or raise his voice. He simply reached into his pocket, pulled out the single crisp sheet of cream bond paper stamped with The Sterling’s gold crest, unfolded it, and laid it flat on the polished black marble counter between himself and Eleanor.

"I tried to check into the Presidential Suite at three-forty, Eleanor," Marcus said evenly. "Your front-desk lead looked at my sweater, refused to swipe my card or check my ID, and manually cancelled the board hold to my face."

Eleanor stared down at the bold red letters printed across the page—RESERVATION CANCELLED / REASON: SUSPECTED FRAUD / OVERRIDE ID: B-409—and then slowly lifted her gaze to Brittany.

Brittany opened her mouth, her lower lip trembling violently beneath her glossy lipstick, before Marcus added one quiet sentence.

"In fact," Marcus said, looking calmly across the counter at Brittany’s pale face, "she told me she just cancelled it, informed me that The Sterling has a very specific standard for the penthouse floor, and said, 'You're welcome.'"

A collective intake of breath rippled through the board members standing behind Eleanor. David, Marcus’s chief counsel, paused with his hand on the brass latch of his briefcase, looking up at the receptionist in disbelief.

"I—Mrs. Sterling, I didn't know!" Brittany blurted out, her voice shrill and cracking as tears finally spilled over her eyelashes, ruining her sharp eyeliner. "He didn't say he was the buyer! He walked up in a plain sweater without an assistant, and my Uncle Richard told me we were supposed to clear unverified holds after three-thirty!"

"Brittany, be quiet!" Richard hissed, his face turning a mottled purple as every board member’s eyes snapped toward him.

"Is that true, Mr. Pendelton?" Eleanor asked, her voice dropping to a temperature that seemed to chill the marble floor.

Arthur stepped forward and placed the three-page master audit log directly beside the cancellation receipt on the counter.

"It goes further than today, Chairwoman Sterling," Arthur said clearly. "For the past month, Miss Miller has been using Director of Rooms Richard Miller’s executive passcode—RM-002—to systematically cancel high-tier corporate holds under false fraud flags. Once the suites were cleared, she reassigned them at a ninety-percent employee discount to her sister, Chloe Miller, for commercial social media shoots. As Miss Miller admitted in my office two minutes ago, she and Mr. Miller have been splitting cash payments from the unauthorized bookings."

Eleanor picked up the three pages of the audit log. For ten long seconds, the only sound in the grand lobby was the crisp rustle of paper as she read the dates, suite numbers, and override codes: B-409 and RM-002.

When Eleanor lowered the pages, she looked at Richard Miller as though he were a stain on her father’s carpet.
