My grandfather’s trust was strictly structured. I was the sole beneficiary, but a clause stated that if I were deemed medically incompetent or institutionalized, the legal spouse would become the fiduciary trustee, granting them total access to the principal to "maintain the family’s standard of care."

Ethan wasn’t putting me away just to take Leo. He was putting me away to liquidate my inheritance to save his own life.

I scrambled to find my phone on his desk, but it wasn't there. I needed a camera. I needed to photograph these documents.

I pulled out the desk drawers, searching for a burner phone or a flash drive. In the bottom drawer, my hand brushed against a heavy manila envelope. It was labeled "Background check - S. Miller."

Sarah.

I pulled the documents out. It was a private investigator’s report. Sarah wasn’t a nanny recommended by an elite agency. Her real name was Sarah Caldwell. The file contained court records, eviction notices, and a thick stack of photographs.

The photographs showed Ethan and Sarah together.

Not recently. They were dated three years ago, long before I ever got pregnant. They were sitting in a restaurant, leaning across the table, holding hands. Another photo showed them entering a cheap motel.

Sarah wasn't just a hired accomplice. She was his mistress. They had known each other for years. He had brought his lover into my home, disguised her as help, and let her hold my baby while they plotted to destroy my life and steal my fortune.

A wave of nausea washed over me, so intense I had to grip the edge of the mahogany desk to stay upright. The betrayal was so absolute, so flawlessly executed, that it felt like the floor was giving way beneath me.

"Find what you're looking for, Clara?"

The voice came from the darkness of the office doorway.

I gasped, spinning around, dropping the files onto the desk.

The overhead lights snapped on, blinding me with sudden brilliance.

Ethan stood in the doorway, his tuxedo jacket discarded, his dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He looked incredibly calm, holding a heavy crystal tumbler of whiskey in one hand.

I backed up against the desk, my hands gripping the edge, my mind racing. "Where is my baby?"

"Leo is fine," Ethan said, taking a slow sip of his drink. He stepped into the room, closing the heavy oak doors behind him, trapping me inside. "He's upstairs with Sarah. They’re packing his bags. We're taking a little vacation while you receive the care you so desperately need."

"I know everything, Ethan," I said, my voice trembling but finding a core of sudden, desperate strength. "I found the bank statements. I know you're bankrupt. I know about Sarah."

Ethan sighed, a heavy, disappointed sound. He walked over to the leather sofa and sat down, crossing his legs casually.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Clara," he said softly. "But being smart doesn't help you if everyone already believes you're crazy."

"You won't get away with this," I said, my chest heaving. "I'll tell the police. I'll demand a blood test. They'll find the drugs you've been having Sarah put in my tea."

"Drugs?" Ethan feigned a look of shock. "Clara, please. The only thing in your system is the anxiety medication prescribed by Dr. Aris. It's perfectly legal, perfectly documented. If you've been abusing it, taking more than prescribed, well... that just further proves you're a danger to yourself."

He smiled, a cold, empty expression that made my skin crawl.

"You can't do this," I whispered, the reality of my complete isolation settling over me. "He's your son."

"He's a means to an end," Ethan corrected sharply, his facade cracking for just a second. "Do you have any idea the kind of pressure I've been under? The people I owe money to? Your grandfather sat on millions while I was drowning. You refused to ask him for a loan. You refused to help your own husband."

"Because you were lying to me!" I shouted.

"It doesn't matter anymore," Ethan said, standing up and setting his glass on a side table. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object. A syringe.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

"Dr. Aris isn't coming for another hour," Ethan said quietly, advancing toward me. "He told me that if you became violent, if you tried to harm yourself or others, I was authorized to administer a powerful sedative to keep you safe until transport arrived."

"No," I breathed, sliding sideways along the edge of the desk.

"It’s going to be a heavy dose, Clara," he said, his eyes locking onto mine with lethal intent. "You might not wake up for a few days. And by the time you do, the trust will be in my name, and you will be locked in a ward where no one will ever believe a single word you say."

He lunged forward.
