“I don't know.”

Vale answered.

“Because Samuel Miller wasn't her father.”

Claire looked at him.

“Stop.”

“He was her protector.”

“Stop!”

Ethan's heart pounded.

Vale continued.

“Samuel found a little girl whose mother had gotten involved with people she shouldn't have. He gave the child a new name and raised her.”

Ethan looked at Claire.

“How old were you when Samuel took you in?”

She whispered, “Four.”

“What was your name before Claire?”

“I don't remember.”

Vale laughed softly.

“I do.”

Claire covered her ears.

“No.”

Vale looked directly at Ethan.

“Her name was Lily.”

Everything stopped.

Even the approaching sirens seemed to vanish.

Ethan stared at Claire.

She shook her head violently.

“No.”

Vale continued.

“Lily Cross.”

Ethan couldn't breathe.

Claire backed toward the porch.

“No. My father told me my parents were [email protected].”

“Samuel lied.”

“He wouldn't.”

“He protected you.”

 Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

Nothing like Lily.

But twenty years changed children.

And hair could be dyed.

Contacts existed.

Memory could be damaged.

Ethan whispered, “Your birthday?”

Claire answered automatically.

“June fourteenth.”

His knees almost gave way.

Lily's birthday.

June fourteenth.

Claire stared at him.

“No.”

Ethan reached into his wallet.

He carried only one childhood photograph of Lily.

He held it out.

Claire looked at it.

Then screamed.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

She grabbed her head.

Images seemed to hit her all at once.

A bicycle.

A yellow kitchen.

A man kneeling beside a broken wheel.

Three coins.

A song.

A scar.

She stared at Ethan's left cheek.

Her lips trembled.

“Daddy?”

Ethan broke.

Twenty years of grief collapsed in one second.

He stepped toward her.

Claire stumbled into him.

Then she wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Daddy!”

Ethan held her.

He couldn't see through his tears.

“My baby.”

Ava ran from the house.

“Mom!”

Claire reached for her.

Ethan dropped to his knees.

Claire pulled Ava between them.

Ava stared at Ethan.

“Why are you crying?”

Ethan laughed through tears.

“Because…”

He couldn't finish.

Claire did.

“He's your grandpa.”

Ava's eyes widened.

“The biker?”

Ethan laughed again.

“Yes.”

She looked amazed.

“You're my grandpa?”

“Yes.”

Ava wrapped both arms around his neck.

And for one impossible second, Ethan believed the story had ended.

He had found Lily.

He had found a granddaughter.

Samuel had protected them.

Vale had lost.

Sirens were coming.

It should have been over.

But Adrian Vale was smiling.

Ray noticed first.

“Why are you smiling?”

Vale looked at Ethan.

“Because that's not the secret Samuel was protecting.”

Ethan slowly stood.

“What?”

Vale nodded toward the metal case.

“You found the documents.”

“Yes.”

“You found the DNA test.”

“Yes.”

“And you found Lily.”

Ethan's hand tightened.

“Then what?”

Vale looked at Ava.

“The girl.”

Ethan stepped in front of her.

“Don't.”

Vale raised both hands.

“I'm not threatening her.”

“Then what are you saying?”

Vale's smile vanished.

“Samuel wasn't protecting Lily from me.”

Claire stared.

“Then who?”

Vale looked toward the road.

The sheriff's vehicles arrived.

Behind them came another car.

An old dark-blue sedan.

It stopped.

The driver's door opened.

A woman in her late fifties stepped out.

Ethan's entire body went rigid.

Rachel.

His former wife.

Lily's mother.

Claire whispered, “Who is that?”

Ethan could barely speak.

“Your mother.”

Rachel looked at Claire.

Her face crumpled.

“Lily.”

Claire took one step forward.

“Mom?”

Rachel nodded.

Claire began crying.

But Ethan noticed something wrong.

Rachel wasn't looking at Lily anymore.
