"Mrs. Ashford, you will have an opportunity to speak. Please allow the witness to finish."

Victoria pressed her lips together.

Sophie continued.

"Ms. Brooks stayed calm. She asked us to continue helping her. Mrs. Ashford kept insulting her, and Mr. Wells came over."

Alexander glanced at Adrian.

"What happened next?"

Sophie lowered her eyes briefly.

"Mr. Wells asked Ms. Brooks to leave the sales floor. He didn't ask Mrs. Ashford to stop making the comments."

Alexander nodded slowly.

"Thank you for being honest."

He then turned toward Daniel.

"Mr. Mercer?"

Daniel stepped forward.

"I witnessed the same sequence of events. Ms. Brooks did not provoke the confrontation. She was attempting to purchase a product, and the manager treated her as though her presence was the problem."

Alexander listened without interruption.

Then he looked toward Naomi.

"Would you like to tell me anything about what happened?"

Naomi thought for a moment.

"I don't believe I need to add much. I came here to buy a gift. Mrs. Ashford decided that my appearance meant I didn't belong. Your manager agreed with her without asking a single question about what had happened."

She paused.

"I understand that retail employees sometimes face difficult situations. I understand that managers have to make quick decisions. But nothing about this situation required him to humiliate me."

Alexander nodded.

"You're right."

He turned toward Adrian.

"Mr. Wells, I want you to understand something. The failure here was not simply that you made an incorrect decision. The failure was the reasoning behind it."

Adrian looked down.

Alexander continued.

"You assumed that the customer with the more expensive appearance, the stronger voice, and the greater purchasing history deserved to be protected. You treated another customer's dignity as something that could be sacrificed to maintain the comfort of the first."

He paused.

"That is not the standard of this company."

Victoria finally found her voice.

"Alexander, surely you're not going to take the word of one woman and an employee over a loyal customer."

Alexander turned toward her.

"I am taking the statements of the people who witnessed the incident. I am also considering the fact that my manager has admitted he asked an innocent customer to leave because he wanted to accommodate you."

Victoria's face hardened.

"Do you realize how much money I've spent in this store?"

"Yes," Alexander replied. "And I appreciate the business you have given us over the years."

She seemed relieved.

Then he continued.

"But your spending does not purchase the right to humiliate another person."

The relief vanished.

Alexander looked at Naomi.

"Ms. Brooks, I sincerely apologize. You should never have been treated this way in one of my stores."

Naomi accepted the apology with a small nod.

"Thank you."

But she was not finished.

"I hope you'll make sure that the next person who walks through those doors doesn't need to know the owner to receive the same treatment."

Alexander held her gaze.

"That is exactly what I intend to do."

Chapter 5: Victoria's Final Attempt

For a moment, Victoria stood motionless.

She had entered Maison Étoile believing herself to be the most important person in the room. She had expected the manager to support her, the staff to obey her, and other customers to remain silent.

Now the situation had reversed.

The owner was standing beside the woman she had tried to drive away.

The witnesses were speaking openly.

And the manager who had supported her was no longer looking at her for guidance.

Victoria decided that the best strategy was to turn the incident into an attack on herself.

"I cannot believe this," she said loudly. "I've been loyal to this store for years, and now I'm being treated as though I'm some kind of criminal because I expressed an opinion."

Alexander remained calm.

"Nobody has called you a criminal, Mrs. Ashford."

"You are making a public spectacle of me."

"I did not create the situation. I came here to understand it."

Victoria gestured toward Naomi.

"And what about her? You know her personally. Of course you're going to defend her."

Naomi started to respond, but Alexander spoke first.

"If I had never met Ms. Brooks, the facts would be the same. You made personal remarks about another customer, and my manager responded by asking that customer to leave."

Victoria shook her head.

"She was being difficult."

"How?"

"She challenged me."

"By asking you to stop insulting her?"

Victoria looked away.

Alexander waited.

When she did not answer, he continued.

"Mrs. Ashford, I want to be very clear. You are free to shop here. You are free to dislike a product, question a price, or express dissatisfaction with our service. You are not free to decide that another customer deserves less respect because you believe her clothing is insufficiently expensive."

Victoria's voice rose.

"Do you have any idea who my husband is?"

Alexander's expression did not change.

"No, and I don't believe it is relevant."

"My husband knows people on the board of several major companies. He could make a phone call that would create serious problems for your business."

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

He knew that Victoria often used her husband's professional connections to intimidate people.

This time, however, the threat had accomplished nothing.

Alexander looked at her with quiet disappointment.

"If your husband has concerns about our business practices, he is welcome to contact me through the appropriate channels. But his position does not change the standards we expect from our customers or employees."

Victoria's cheeks flushed.

She looked around for support.

No one offered it.

The older customer near the handbags stepped forward.

"I was here when this started," she said. "The young woman was perfectly polite. You were the one making a scene."

Victoria stared at her.

"Excuse me?"

The customer, whose name was Margaret Ellis, stood straight despite her age.

"I said that the young woman was polite. I also said you were making a scene."

Margaret placed the sunglasses she had been examining back on the counter.

"I had planned to purchase a gift here today. After watching what happened, I think I'll take my business somewhere else."

A younger customer nodded.

"So will I."

Another woman quietly agreed.

The reaction was not dramatic, but it was unmistakable.

People were no longer willing to pretend they had not witnessed the humiliation.

Victoria looked toward Adrian.

"You're going to let them speak to me like this?"

Adrian did not answer.

For the first time in years, he understood that his job was not to make Victoria happy at any cost.

It was to maintain the standards of the store.

And he had failed.

Alexander turned toward Claire, his executive assistant.

"Please make a note of the witnesses' names and contact information, with their permission. I want a formal account of what happened."

Claire nodded.

"Of course."

Then Alexander addressed Adrian.

"You will provide a written report before the end of the day. You will include your own actions, the reasons for your decision, and any relevant records from the appointment system."

Adrian swallowed.

"Yes, sir."

"Until the initial review is complete, you will step away from customer-facing management duties."

The manager looked up sharply.

"Sir?"

"This is not a final disciplinary decision. It is a precaution while we establish the facts. You will have an opportunity to respond fully."

Adrian nodded, though his face revealed his anxiety.

Victoria looked as if she could no longer believe what she was seeing.

"You're actually taking action against your own manager because of this?"

Alexander replied, "I am taking action because of what he did."

He turned toward Naomi.
