“So the woman who has been blocking this parking area doesn't own it.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

“And the HOA doesn't own it.”

“No.”

“And the developer Karen was working with?”

Evelyn looked at Walter.

“They have no legal claim to it.”

Silence.

Then the grocery store manager spoke.

“We suspected something was happening because Ms. Miller kept demanding access control over the lot.”

Walter looked at him.

“And that's why you called the police?”

The manager nodded.

“After Saturday, yes.”

Officer Brooks stepped forward.

“I also reviewed the complaints.”

He held up a report.

“There were twelve incidents involving Karen over the past three months.”

Karen wasn't there to defend herself.

But she soon would be.

Because when she learned the truth had been uncovered, she returned to the parking lot that afternoon.

And she brought the developer with her.

Chapter 4 — Karen's Biggest Mistake

Karen arrived in a black SUV.

She stepped out holding her blue clipboard.

The developer followed.

His name was Richard Cole.

He looked furious.

“What happened?” Karen demanded.

Richard stared at her.

“You told me you controlled the property.”

“I do.”

“No, you don't.”

Karen's face tightened.

“Not yet.”

“Not yet?”

Richard lowered his voice.

“You told me the paperwork was handled.”

“It was supposed to be.”

“You were supposed to deliver access.”

Karen looked toward the parking lot.

Walter stood near the curb.

Officer Brooks was beside him.

Evelyn stood with the store manager.

Karen's face went pale.

Richard noticed.

“You didn't tell me about them.”

“I didn't know.”

Walter stepped forward.

“You should have checked the public records.”

Karen glared at him.

“You've ruined everything.”

“No,” Walter replied.

“You did.”

Karen pointed at him.

“You had no right to interfere.”

Walter shook his head.

“You interfered with yourself.”

Richard looked at Karen.

“What exactly did you promise me?”

Karen didn't answer.

Richard's expression darkened.

“Karen.”

Still nothing.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You promised him access to property you don't own.”

Richard looked at her.

“Is that true?”

Karen finally snapped.

“Everyone was going to benefit!”

Maria, who had followed the group outside, laughed bitterly.

“Everyone?”

Karen turned.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you lie?”

Karen's face twisted.

“I was trying to improve the neighborhood!”

Walter stared at her.

“By secretly selling access?”

“I wasn't selling it.”

Evelyn held up a document.

“You signed a preliminary consulting agreement.”

Richard's eyes widened.

“That agreement was supposed to be confidential.”

Evelyn smiled.

“It isn't confidential anymore.”

Officer Brooks stepped forward.

“Ms. Miller, we also need to discuss the repeated harassment complaints.”

Karen's confidence collapsed.

“You can't arrest me.”

“I didn't say I was arresting you.”

“But you want to.”

“No.”

Officer Brooks looked at the blue clipboard.

“I want you to understand something.”

Karen stared at him.

“You don't have authority just because you carry paperwork.”

She looked down at her clipboard.

For the first time, it looked ridiculous.

Just a piece of plastic and paper.

Not power.

Not law.

Not ownership.

Nothing.

Richard suddenly turned toward her.

“You cost me the project.”

Karen's eyes widened.

“You promised me—”

“I promised you a consulting fee.”

“You said I would receive part of the development.”

“I said that if the land could be legally acquired.”

Karen looked around desperately.

Everyone was watching her.

Walter approached quietly.

“Karen.”

She didn't respond.

“You spent months trying to convince everyone that you owned something.”

She looked at him.

“And now?”

Walter pointed toward the faded boundary line.

“Now everyone knows where the real line is.”

Karen looked down.
