Victoria turned toward Officer Mitchell as if expecting him to take control of the conversation.

"Tell him why we're here," she demanded.

The officer remained professional.

"Ma'am, I'm here because a complaint was made. I need to understand what happened before I can determine whether anything requires police attention."

Victoria appeared offended by the suggestion that her version might not be enough.

"I have already explained everything! He has been causing problems for months."

Officer Mitchell nodded slightly.

"I understand that's what you're reporting. I still need to hear from everyone involved."

Daniel folded his arms loosely.

"That's fair."

Victoria immediately turned back toward him.

"Don't act as though you're cooperating. You know exactly what you've done."

Daniel's expression remained composed.

"No, Victoria. I know exactly what I've done, and that's why I'm asking you to be specific."

The words irritated her more than a shouted insult would have.

She was accustomed to people becoming nervous when she mentioned lawyers, the association, or the police. She expected Daniel to become defensive, apologize, or agree to whatever demand she made simply to end the confrontation.

Instead, he continued to ask reasonable questions.

And with every question, her confidence began to weaken.

Officer Mitchell asked Victoria to explain the original complaint.

She claimed Daniel had been operating a construction business without permission, bringing unauthorized people into the neighborhood, and making changes that threatened the safety and appearance of nearby properties.

Daniel listened carefully.

Then he asked, "Are those the same allegations the association investigated last month?"

Victoria froze for a fraction of a second.

"That has nothing to do with today."

"It has everything to do with whether the information you're giving the officer is accurate."

Her mouth opened, but no immediate response came.

Daniel stepped inside for a moment and returned with a thin folder.

He placed it on a small table near the porch railing.

"I have the association's written findings," he explained. "They investigated the business allegation and confirmed that no violation occurred. They also reviewed the driveway and landscaping complaints. Every one of those cases was closed."

Victoria pushed her sunglasses higher on her nose.

"You can't just wave papers around and expect everyone to believe you."

"I'm not asking anyone to believe me without checking. I'm offering the documents so the officer can review them."

Officer Mitchell accepted the folder.

He began looking through the pages while Victoria shifted impatiently from one foot to the other.

For the first time that morning, she seemed uncertain about what would happen next.

Daniel did not smile or celebrate. He simply waited.

The officer examined the dates, the official letterheads, and the written conclusions. He then looked up and asked Victoria whether she had seen these documents before.

"I've seen some of them," she admitted.

"And you understand that the association found no violation?"

Victoria's face reddened.

"They don't enforce the rules properly. That's the whole problem."

Officer Mitchell closed the folder halfway.

"Even if you disagree with the association's decision, that doesn't automatically make this a police matter."

The words landed harder than Victoria expected.

She had imagined that the uniform would intimidate Daniel and force him to comply. Instead, the officer was asking her to support her allegations with evidence.

Daniel finally spoke again.

"Officer, I don't have any objection to you checking whatever needs to be checked. But I would like the record to show that these repeated accusations have been investigated and dismissed."

Victoria pointed a finger toward him.
