THE WHISPER AT MILLER'S DINER
Chapter I: The Outdoor Table and the Drifter
The midday sun beat down across the cracked pavement outside Miller’s Diner, an iconic roadside greasy spoon perched at the corner of a busy neighborhood square. Parked along the curb were a dozen gleaming heavy motorcycles, their chrome pipes cooling in the afternoon breeze.
Occupying the long steel outdoor tables were twelve members of the local motorcycle club. Dressed in patched leather cuts with club rockers spanning their broad backs, the bearded men drank coffee from ceramic mugs, their deep laughter and conversation filling the sidewalk.
Approaching the table with hesitant, scuffing steps was Leo, a seventeen-year-old teen in worn sneakers, dirty denim, and an oversized gray hoodie, with a heavy backpack slung over his shoulder.
The club’s chapter president, a broad-shouldered man with a long graying beard and intense, weathered eyes, noticed the teenager approaching.
