THE SHIFT MEAL AT BOOTH SEVEN

Chapter I: The Stranger from the Storm

A cold, torrential rain battered the large front windows of the roadside diner, streaking across the glass and blurring the headlights of passing highway traffic. Inside, warm pendant lights illuminated the tiled aisle lined with green vinyl booths where patrons sat quietly enjoying their meals.

The glass front door creaked open, and a frail, shivering elderly man stumbled inside.

His clothes were worn and soaked through, his heavy denim jacket frayed at the cuffs, and his silver-white hair and beard clung to his weathered, trembling face. He leaned heavily against the booth partitions, clutching his stomach as he dragged his mud-stained boots toward an empty table by the window.

Carrying a loaded serving tray through the aisle was Toby, an eighteen-year-old busboy wearing an olive-green work shirt and a burgundy apron.

Toby had just plated his own staff dinner—a hot, steaming meal of seasoned steak, glazed greens, and white rice alongside a warm cup of coffee. Seeing the exhausted traveler shivering in the corner booth, Toby walked straight past the employee break counter and gently laid the tray across the table.

"Thank you..." the old man rasped softly, his tired eyes welling with disbelief and gratitude.
