Rebecca had kept the tablet because it contained Lily’s hospital photographs, voice notes, and unfinished homework. She had opened it many times but could never bring herself to watch the folder labeled DAD DAY.

The viral video forced her to.

We gathered inside the studio. Bear stayed near the door, shoulders hunched as if he expected someone to strike him. Rebecca placed the tablet on the front desk and opened the recording.

Lily appeared on the screen wearing her purple scarf and hospital gown. An oxygen tube curved beneath her nose. She had positioned the tablet too low, so half the image showed her chin and the ceiling above her bed.

“Is it recording?” she asked.

A nurse’s voice answered from outside the frame. “Yes, boss.”

Lily smiled.

“Dad, if you’re watching this, I probably didn’t get to dance at the studio.”

Bear turned away from the screen.

Otis placed one hand against his back. Bear did not shake it off.

In the video, Lily explained that she had seen photographs from previous father-daughter classes. She had noticed girls standing against the wall while fathers danced with other children. One girl had pretended to fix her slipper through an entire song.

“I know what it feels like when everybody gets picked up except you,” Lily said. “So if I can’t go, you still have to.”

Bear covered his mouth.

“I mean it, Dad. Wear the tutu. Take my shoes so I’m there. But dance with the girls whose dads don’t come, because you’re huge and they can all share you.”

A few children giggled. The adults did not.

Lily leaned closer to the tablet.

“And don’t make your scary face. It isn’t scary to me, but other people don’t know you yet.”

The recording should have ended there. Lily reached toward the screen, missed the button, and looked off-camera.

“Do you think he’ll do it?” the nurse asked.

“He does what I tell him.”

“Every time?”

“No. But the important times.”

The image shook. Lily’s fingers covered the lens.

Then her voice returned once more.

“If he gets lonely, tell him the dance isn’t over just because I went first.”

The video ended.

Bear remained standing for several seconds. Then his knees gave way.

Otis and Finch caught him before he struck the floor. They lowered him beside the mirror, where he sat with Lily’s slippers pressed against his forehead. No howl came from him. No speech.

Only one harsh breath after another.

Rebecca knelt beside him.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Bear shook his head.

“I knew she wanted me to go.”

“You didn’t know she made it a promise.”

“I knew enough.”

“No.” Rebecca placed the tablet in his lap. “You thought you failed her. She thought she was giving you somewhere to go.”

That was the first turn in the story none of us had understood. Bear had not created the ritual to punish himself. Lily had created it to keep him among people after she was gone.

There was another recording.

In the second video, Lily asked Rebecca to open a small pink box hidden beneath her winter clothes. Rebecca had brought it to the studio. Inside were thirty-two handmade bracelets, each threaded with cheap plastic beads spelling BIG FEET.

The bracelets had raised the first money in Lily’s dance fund.

At the bottom of the box was a list written in purple marker:

Girls who need shoes.
Girls whose dads work.
Girls whose dads are far away.
Girls who don’t have dads.
Girls who just need somebody tall.

Beside the final sentence, Lily had drawn Bear in a tutu. He looked like a pink refrigerator with a beard.

Nora leaned over the box. “That looks like him.”

Bear laughed.

It came out broken, but it was laughter.

Rebecca returned the slippers to him. Bear did not tuck them inside his vest this time. He set them beside the mirror exactly where Lily had asked him to bring them.

Then he unfolded his tutu.
