“That’s enough,” Maya said, her voice now dangerously quiet. She stood up straight, her hands still held open, but her posture had shifted. She was no longer just a girl being bullied; she was a student of the craft, assessing angles, proximity, and exits. She saw the way Chloe stood—off-balance, leaning heavily on her right leg—and the way the other girls were bunched too close together, limiting their own movement.

“Or what?” Chloe sneered, stepping forward again, her hand raised to shove Maya hard into the lockers. “What are you going to do, ‘broke’ girl? Call the police? Cry to the principal?”

The principal’s office was a floor away. The teachers were still out of sight. The air in the hallway grew heavy, stagnant with the scent of perfume and hostility. Chloe reached out, her fingers tightening into a claw, aiming for Maya’s shoulder to pin her against the cold steel of the locker.

Maya’s eyes narrowed. The panic was gone, replaced by a crystalline, terrifying stillness.

CHAPTER 3

The hallway went deathly still. Chloe lunged, her fingers clawing toward Maya’s shoulder, her face twisted in a mask of entitlement.

Everything seemed to slow down for Maya. She didn’t think; she didn’t plan. She simply shifted.

As Chloe’s weight committed to the forward shove, Maya dropped her center of gravity, executing a textbook defensive pivot. She caught Chloe’s wrist with her left hand—a firm, authoritative grip—and stepped into the space Chloe had just vacated. In one fluid motion, Maya used Chloe’s own momentum against her. She didn’t strike; she swept. A swift, controlled foot hook behind Chloe’s lead ankle, combined with a sharp downward redirection of the wrist, sent the socialite stumbling forward.
