The students lining the lockers began to whisper. The collective murmur sounded like a hive of bees waking up. They didn't know what was in the envelope, but they knew Trent. They knew he was untouchable. And right now, the untouchable quarterback looked like he was about to be sick on the floor.

"Brody," Trent barked, not taking his eyes off the envelope. "Close the hall."

Brody and two other jocks immediately fanned out, their broad shoulders effectively blocking the main flow of traffic. A few freshmen who had been trying to squeeze past suddenly reversed direction, fleeing down a side corridor. The wall of athletes created a makeshift barricade, isolating Maya and Trent in a pocket of high-tension space.

"You think you're smart," Trent hissed, his face flushing a deep, angry red. He lowered his voice so only she could hear. "You think you can just come into my school and mess with my life? You don't know who you're dealing with."

"I know exactly who I'm dealing with," Maya replied. She looked him up and down, her eyes lingering on the silver watch strapped to his left wrist. It was a heavy, expensive diving watch, completely out of place on a high schooler. The sight of it made Maya's stomach tighten, a flash of cold anger spiking through her chest, but she kept her face carefully blank. "You're Trent Lawson. You throw a football well enough that people pretend not to notice you're a bully."

"Give me the letter, you psycho!" Trent lunged forward, his hand swiping violently at her arm.

Maya was faster. She sidestepped, slipping the envelope back into the front pocket of her backpack in one fluid motion. She zipped it shut and pulled the bag tight against her chest.

Trent stumbled forward, catching his balance against the lockers. He spun around, his fists clenched, his breathing ragged. The fear in his eyes was rapidly metastasizing into rage.

"It's over, Trent," Maya said quietly. "Blue Ridge University rescinded your athletic scholarship. You failed two core classes, and when you tried to hack into the school's grading system to change them, they caught you. The university was notified yesterday. Your offer is gone."

Brody, who had been listening closely, let out a low whistle. "Whoa. Trent, is that true? You lost the ride?"

"Shut up, Brody!" Trent roared, spinning on his friend. He turned back to Maya, his eyes wild. "You don't know anything. That letter is a fake. It's a mistake."

"The Dean of Admissions at Blue Ridge doesn't make mistakes," Maya said. "And neither does the academic integrity board. You hid the letter because you didn't want the coach to know. Because if Coach finds out you're academically ineligible, you can't play in the state championship on Friday. Your entire high school career ends today."

Trent took another step toward her, his jaw set. The physical intimidation was back, but this time, it wasn't a game. It was survival. He looked at her backpack as if it were a bomb he needed to defuse.

"You're not leaving this hallway with that bag," Trent said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, terrifyingly calm register. "Brody. Don't let her pass."

The three jocks tightened their formation, standing shoulder-to-shoulder, completely blocking the corridor. There was no way out. The crowd of students watched in stunned silence, waiting to see what the quiet new girl would do next.

Maya looked at the wall of athletes, then back to Trent. Her heart was beating a frantic rhythm against her ribs, but she forced her hands to remain perfectly steady.
