“What about the mother?”
“She'll do what she's told.”
Evelyn began trembling.
“What did he mean?”
Samuel turned another page.
There was a hospital report from the night of the accident.
A nurse had written that Evelyn had repeatedly said:
“Daddy pushed Mommy.”
Evelyn stared at the sentence.
Suddenly, a memory appeared.
Rain against glass.
Her mother crying.
Her father shouting.
A hand gripping the steering wheel.
A sudden movement.
Her mother falling against the door.
Then the car turning violently.
Evelyn gasped.
“I remember.”
Celeste rushed toward her.
“What do you remember?”
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“He pushed you.”
Celeste froze.
“He was angry. You wanted to leave. He pushed you, and then the car moved.”
Samuel stood still.
Evelyn continued, her voice breaking.
“You tried to take the keys. He grabbed your arm.”
Celeste began sobbing.
“I thought you were unconscious.”
“I wasn't.”
Evelyn covered her face.
“I heard everything.”
Samuel looked at the documents.
The accident had not been random.
Adrian had been intoxicated and furious because Celeste had threatened to leave him.
He had grabbed her while driving.
The car had veered toward the barrier.
Afterward, he had used his wealth to bury the truth.
But why had Evelyn stopped walking?
Samuel understood now.
The accident had caused physical trauma.
The fear had caused neurological shutdown.
Then Adrian had reinforced the paralysis by telling her that she was permanently damaged.
Every time Evelyn tried to stand, he had warned her that she would fall.
Every time she asked about recovery, he had told her to accept reality.
He had turned a temporary condition into an identity.
Evelyn looked at Samuel.
“Can I ever forgive him?”
Samuel answered honestly.
“You don't owe forgiveness to someone who refuses responsibility.”
Celeste touched her daughter's hand.
“I should have protected you.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“You were afraid.”
“That doesn't excuse it.”
“No,” Evelyn whispered.
“But it explains it.”
Then the study door opened.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
He looked at the files spread across the desk.
He looked at the key in Celeste's hand.
Then at Evelyn.
For a long moment, nobody moved.
Finally, Adrian said:
“You were never supposed to find that room.”
CHAPTER 7 — THE FATHER'S CONFESSION
Adrian closed the door behind him.
He didn't call security.
He didn't call the police.
He simply stood there, staring at his daughter.
Evelyn looked smaller than ever in her wheelchair.
But her eyes were different.
For the first time, she wasn't looking at him as her protector.
She was looking at him as a stranger.
“Did you cause the accident?” she asked.
Adrian's mouth opened.
No words came out.
Celeste stepped forward.
“Answer her.”
Adrian looked at his wife.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“You were leaving me.”
Celeste's expression hardened.
“You nearly killed us.”
“I lost control.”
“You had been drinking.”
“I was angry.”
“You grabbed me while driving.”
Adrian looked toward Evelyn.
“I never meant for her to get hurt.”
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“But I did.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I thought I could fix it.”
“You didn't fix it.”
“I protected you.”
“You lied to me.”
“I told you what the doctors said.”
“You chose the doctors who said it.”
Adrian flinched.
Samuel stepped toward the desk.
“You removed her from rehabilitation.”
“I wanted her safe.”
“You blocked every specialist who questioned the diagnosis.”
“I couldn't watch her suffer.”
“You paid people to hide the evidence.”
