Build Her Something That Moves

The small community hall smelled of vanilla frosting, cheap crepe paper, and pastel balloons that swayed gently under the low ceiling tiles. Eight-year-old Chloe sat in her standard, faded hospital-issue wheelchair near the corner of the table, her hands resting quietly in her lap. Her legs were covered with a soft blanket, paralyzed from the waist down since the devastating highway collision two years earlier that had claimed her father's life.

Chloe’s mother, Sarah, forced a bright smile as she set down a homemade birthday cake decorated with eight fluttering candles. The room held only a handful of neighbors and relatives, a quiet, modest gathering defined by the absence of the loud, joyous laughter that once filled their home. Sarah worked double shifts at the town diner, struggling constantly with medical bills, insurance denials, and the heavy sorrow of raising a disabled child alone.

Just as the children began to gather to sing, the double glass doors of the hall swung wide open with an abrupt, thunderous clang.

The cheerful chatter in the room instantly evaporated.

Stepping across the threshold was a massive, hulking figure. Dressed in a scuffed black leather cut with heavy combat boots and a thick, greying beard that reached his chest, Hammer entered the room like a living storm. Flanking him at the entrance were four equally intimidating riders from his veteran motorcycle club, their arms covered in road ink and scars. In his massive, scarred arms, Hammer carried a heavy, polished black wooden trunk bound in riveted brass and studded with silver star bolts.

Sarah’s face instantly drained of color, her protective instincts turning to cold fury. She stepped directly between the giant biker and her daughter’s wheelchair, trembling with indignation.
