Gary suddenly stopped struggling.

A strange smile appeared on his face.

He leaned slightly toward Marcus and whispered something only Marcus could hear.

Marcus’s expression immediately changed.

The confidence disappeared from his eyes.

For the first time, the biker hesitated.

Whatever Gary had just whispered...

Marcus realized the nightmare might not be over.

PART 2: "THE BIKER WHO BECAME HER SHIELD"

Marcus had stepped between a terrified little girl named Chloe and Gary, the man she said had taken her from a playground and threatened her mother.
As frightened shoppers called police, Marcus restrained Gary and promised the child she would not be taken anywhere against her will.
But when sirens reached the supermarket parking lot, Gary stopped fighting and whispered something that drained the certainty from Marcus's face.
Whatever Gary knew had nothing to do with the supermarket—and everything to do with a part of Marcus's life he had spent years trying not to remember.

Gary's breath was hot against Marcus's ear.

“You really don't recognize her, do you?”

Marcus tightened his grip on the man's wrist.

“Recognize who?”

Gary gave a small, ugly laugh.

“The kid.”

Marcus glanced over his shoulder.

Chloe stood several feet away now, protected by the store manager and an older woman who had wrapped a cardigan around her trembling shoulders.

Her red curls framed a pale, frightened face.

Then she looked directly at Marcus.

Gary whispered two more words.

“Evan's daughter.”

For one impossible second, Marcus forgot where he was.

The crashing pasta boxes, the crowd, the approaching sirens—all of it seemed to move several miles away.

“What did you say?”

Gary's smile widened.

“You heard me.”

Marcus's hand loosened involuntarily.

Gary twisted, trying to pull free, but Marcus recovered and held him against the shelving.

“Don't.”

His voice had changed.

The anger was gone.

Something colder had taken its place.

“You don't get to use that name.”

“Oh, I think I do.”

The automatic doors at the front of the store opened, and two police officers hurried inside with the manager waving them toward the aisle.

Gary's expression changed immediately.

His arrogance disappeared behind a mask of innocence.

“This lunatic attacked me!” he shouted. “I was trying to get my girlfriend's daughter, and he assaulted me!”

“She is not his daughter,” the manager said quickly. “The little girl said he took her without permission.”

Half a dozen customers started speaking at once.

“I heard her.”

“I recorded it.”

“He grabbed for the child.”

“She was terrified.”

Marcus slowly released Gary as the officers took control.

One officer separated him from the others while another crouched several feet from Chloe and spoke gently.

Marcus answered questions almost mechanically.

His name.

Address.

What he had witnessed.

Whether Gary had threatened him.

Whether Marcus had struck Gary.

“No.”

“You restrained him?”

“Yes.”
