I shoved the phone into my pocket and hailed a passing cab, ordering the driver to take me to a small, unremarkable motel in New Jersey. I couldn't go back to the estate. I had to disappear for twenty-four hours.

The next evening, at 8:15 PM, the Plaza Hotel ballroom was a sea of velvet, diamonds, and black tuxedos.

I stood in the shadows of the secondary service kitchen, peering through the small circular glass of the swinging doors. The room was breathtakingly beautiful. Enormous crystal chandeliers cast a soft, ambient glow over the crowd. Waiters wove through the elite guests, carrying silver trays of champagne. At the far end of the room, a massive portrait of my father was draped in white roses.

Standing beneath the portrait, radiating grief and power, were Julian and Isabella.

Julian wore a bespoke black tuxedo, holding a microphone, speaking softly and charismatically to the silent, captive audience. Isabella stood slightly behind him, wearing a stunning, vibrant red evening gown. Her hair was perfectly styled, strategically hiding the small bruise on her forehead where I had struck her. She looked like a queen waiting for her crown.

"...Arthur wasn't just a father to me," Julian’s voice echoed smoothly through the room's speakers. "He was a mentor. A visionary. And when he passed, he left a void that Isabella and I have sworn to fill, dedicating our lives to the Vance Foundation."

A polite murmur of applause rippled through the crowd.

I looked down at myself. I had returned to my hidden apartment in the city to change. I was wearing an elegant, one-shoulder black evening gown. It was severe, powerful, and utterly devoid of the soft, mourning pastel colors Julian always dressed me in.

I reached up and touched the right side of my face. The deep scratch Isabella had given me was raw and jagged. I hadn't covered it with makeup. In fact, earlier that night, I had purposely wiped away the bandage, letting a vivid, undeniable streak of dried blood remain smeared across my cheek. I wanted everyone to see the violence they had tried to hide.

I held the thick brown envelope in my left hand. Inside were the forged wire transfers, the fake will, and a massive printout of the true timeline of my father's death, corroborated by his shattered gold pocket watch.

I also held my phone. Ten minutes ago, I had sent a mass email to every journalist and board member in the room, attaching the PDF scans of the embezzlement evidence.

The emails were timed to deliver right now.

Across the ballroom, a sudden chorus of simultaneous electronic chimes and vibration hums erupted from the pockets and evening bags of the guests. It was a subtle, weirdly synchronized noise that caused a ripple of confusion in the crowd.

Dozens of people pulled out their phones.

I watched as expressions morphed from polite boredom to absolute shock. Whispers broke out. A powerful state senator in the front row showed his screen to his wife, his jaw dropping. The murmurs swelled into a loud, undeniable hum of chaotic tension.

Julian stopped speaking, a confused, strained smile faltering on his face as he looked at the crowd. "Ladies and gentlemen, please..."

Isabella frowned, stepping forward and whispering something into his ear. Julian shook his head, pulling his own phone from his pocket. He looked at the screen.

The color completely drained from his face. He looked like he had just been shot.

This was the moment.

I pushed through the heavy wooden service doors and stepped into the light of the ballroom.

I didn't sneak in. I walked with deliberate, heavy steps straight down the central aisle, the high heels of my shoes cutting through the rising noise of the crowd.

Heads began to turn. Gasps erupted as people saw me—the grieving widow, supposedly mentally unfit, striding into the room in a black gown with a bloody smear violently dragged across her face, carrying a thick legal envelope.

"Julian!" I projected my voice, sharp and lethal, cutting entirely through the massive room.

Julian’s head snapped up. His eyes locked onto mine, widening in pure, unadulterated terror. He dropped the microphone. It hit the marble floor with a piercing electronic squeal that made half the room flinch.

Isabella stared at me, her face pale, her lips parted in horror. She realized instantly that the silent, psychological war was over. I had dragged the monsters into the light.

"Guards!" Isabella screamed, her voice cracking with manic panic, entirely dropping her poised facade. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me. "Marcus! Get her out of here! She’s violently ill! She’s having an episode! Grab her!"

Four massive, bald security guards in black tuxedos stepped out from the perimeter of the room. They were Marcus’s men. The men Julian paid.
