Hale looked directly at him.
"Find out what he knows."
The next morning, Daniel received a message.
THEY HAVE YOUR PHOTO.
He looked at the screen.
Then smiled.
"Finally."
His assistant frowned.
"You're not worried?"
"No."
"Why?"
Daniel placed the phone down.
"Because now they'll start hunting me."
He stood.
"And when criminals hunt an investigator, they usually leave evidence behind."
That evening, Daniel walked into a small café.
He ordered coffee.
Sat by the window.
And waited.
A man entered five minutes later.
He wore a baseball cap.
He sat two tables away.
Daniel didn't look at him.
"You can stop pretending you're not following me," Daniel said.
The man froze.
Daniel took a sip of coffee.
"You're not very good at this."
The man stood.
"I'm not with them."
Daniel finally looked at him.
"Then who are you?"
The man slowly removed his cap.
He was a young police officer.
"Officer Evan Brooks."
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"I know who you are."
Brooks swallowed.
"I want to help."
"Why?"
"Because I joined the department to be a cop."
He lowered his voice.
"Not a criminal."
Daniel studied him.
"How much do you know?"
"Enough to know Captain Hale has people everywhere."
"How many?"
Brooks shook his head.
"I don't know."
Then he leaned closer.
"But I know one thing."
"What?"
"Someone inside your unit is feeding him everything."
Daniel's face became serious.
"I already know."
Brooks looked surprised.
"You do?"
Daniel smiled.
"That's why you're sitting here."
CHAPTER 4 — THE MOLE
Daniel returned to headquarters and gathered his team.
He didn't tell them everything.
He simply said:
"We have a leak."
Everyone looked at each other.
Daniel placed three sealed envelopes on the table.
"Each of you gets different information."
The investigators stared.
"What's this?"
"Three different versions of tomorrow's operation."
One investigator frowned.
"You think the mole will report it?"
"Exactly."
Daniel handed them out.
The next morning, Captain Hale made a move.
But only one version of the operation had leaked.
Daniel knew exactly which envelope had been compromised.
The mole was Investigator Thomas Grant.
One of Daniel's own men.
Daniel watched Grant through the glass.
Then he entered the room.
"Thomas."
Grant turned.
"Inspector."
"You were at the warehouse last night."
Grant's face changed.
"I—"
"We have video."
Grant stopped talking.
Daniel placed photographs on the table.
Grant sat down.
"Please."
Daniel remained standing.
"How long?"
Grant looked at the floor.
"Eight months."
"How much?"
Grant said nothing.
Daniel waited.
Finally, Grant whispered:
"Thirty thousand."
Daniel closed his eyes for a moment.
"Thirty thousand dollars."
Grant nodded.
"I needed it."
Daniel looked at him.
"No."
Grant raised his eyes.
"You wanted it."
Grant began crying.
Daniel didn't react.
