THE CRYING BOY SAID HE WAS GOOD – THEN THE BIKER READ THE FOUR WORDS ON HIS RECEIPT
The little boy was not screaming when Duke Maddox found him.
That was the first thing that made Duke slow his motorcycle.
A child alone on a dark sidewalk should have been crying for his mother, calling for someone, making the kind of noise that pulled adults out of shops and cars and houses.
This boy was doing none of that.
He stood outside the glass door of Mabel’s Hot Chicken and Takeaway with one small fist tapping softly against the darkened window.
Knock.
Pause.
Knock.
Pause.
The sign above the restaurant was dead, the windows were black, and a handwritten notice taped inside the door explained that the place was closed for repairs.
No one was inside to hear him.
No one was coming to open that door.
