"Could you... could you please spare one dollar for a sandwich?" she stammered, holding out a trembling, filthy hand. "My mom is sick... we have no food. Please."

The heavy silence of the desert seemed to freeze around them.

Kurt stared at her outstretched palm. Her fingers were calloused for a child, her knuckles blackened with grease. In that single second, the thick armor Kurt had built around his heart over fifteen years of drift and isolation began to crack. She wasn't begging for a handout; she was trying to work for it.

"One dollar won't buy you a damn thing in there," Kurt grunted.

The girl’s face fell. Her shoulders slumped in total defeat, and she turned her head away to hide a sob.

"Hey," Kurt commanded softly.

She glanced back up, her eyes wide with fear.

Kurt gestured with his chin toward the diner’s front entrance. "Put that rag away. You're coming inside. You're going to eat two double cheeseburgers, fries, and whatever else fits into that skinny stomach. And then, you’re taking me straight to your mother."

The little girl’s jaw dropped. "Really? You're not mad?"

"I’m mad that you think a real meal costs a single dollar," Kurt said, turning toward the glass door. "Move your feet, kid. Let's go."

Inside Diner 2311, the waitress, Brenda, rushed to their booth with a towering plate of burgers, a mound of golden fries, and a frosted glass of chocolate milkshake. Kurt also ordered two large roast beef sandwiches, a thermos of hot chicken soup, and several gallons of bottled water packed to go.

The girl ate with the frantic intensity of someone who hadn't seen food in days, wiping her mouth with the back of her sleeve between bites.

"What's your name, kid?" Kurt asked, sipping his black coffee.

"Maya," she mumbled around a mouthful of burger. "Maya Campbell."

Kurt froze, the coffee cup hovering inches from his lips. His knuckles tightened around the ceramic mug until they turned white.
