The Price of Kindness

The autumn rain beat steadily against the large front window of Sweet Briar Bakery, turning the city street into a blurred canvas of amber streetlights and red taillights. Inside, the bakery was warm, filled with the comforting aroma of baked bread, cinnamon rolls, and fresh espresso.

Sitting alone at a small wooden two-seater beside the rain-streaked glass was Henry. To anyone walking past, he was merely an old man down on his luck, seeking refuge from the bitter evening chill. His olive-drab work jacket was frayed at the cuffs and collar, his flannel shirt had seen better days, and his silver-white hair fell unkempt across a face etched with deep lines of exhaustion. His hands shook slightly as he fumbled through a worn, paper-thin leather wallet, counting out what little money he had.

Stepping up to the table with a warm smile was Clara, a twenty-two-year-old server. Wearing a modest green button-up and an apron, she set down a fresh, toasted ham-and-cheese sandwich alongside a steaming mug of black coffee. Clara was working long shifts while caring for her ailing mother at home, but despite the fatigue behind her hazel eyes, her warmth never dimmed.

Henry looked at the plate, then looked up with visible shame as he laid a crumpled one-dollar bill and a handful of dull quarters onto the table.

"I’m a little short today," Henry murmured, his voice cracked with age and embarrassment.

Clara immediately reached out, gently placing her hand over his and nudging the coins and bill back toward his wallet.
