Chapter 1: The Woman in the Simple Clothes
“Release her. NOW.””
The entire boutique went silent.
A second earlier, I had been standing in the middle of the most expensive luxury store in the city with a security guard gripping my arm, while a saleswoman watched with a satisfied smile.
She thought she had already won.
She thought the woman in the plain cream sweater, simple black pants, and worn leather handbag standing in front of her was someone who could be embarrassed, threatened, and forced to pay.
She had no idea whose store she was standing in.
The guard immediately loosened his grip.
I slowly pulled my arm back and rubbed the spot where his fingers had tightened.
The saleswoman, Chloe, looked confused.
Then she laughed nervously.
“Why are you all acting like this?”” she asked.
“She damaged a $200,000 emerald dress.””
The store manager, Daniel, walked toward us with a pale face. He looked like he had just seen a disaster unfold in front of him.
“Chloe,” he said quietly, “do you understand what you just did?””
She crossed her arms.
“I protected the store. That’s my job.””
Daniel stared at her.
“No. Your job was to protect our customers.””
Her expression changed slightly.
I watched silently as the people around us avoided eye contact. Other shoppers stood near the mirrors and jewelry displays, pretending not to listen, but everyone was watching.
Ten minutes earlier, I had walked into the boutique because I needed to review the latest collection before an important company event.
I wasn’t there to show off.
I wasn’t there to impress anyone.
I had grown up surrounded by luxury, but I had never felt the need to wear it like armor.
My father always told me, “The person wearing the clothes matters more than the clothes themselves.””
I believed him.
Apparently, Chloe didn’t.
When I first entered the store, she looked me up and down before even saying hello.
“Can I help you?”” she asked.
Her tone sounded polite, but her eyes told a different story.
“I’d like to see the emerald collection,” I replied.
She glanced at my handbag.
Then at my shoes.
Then back at my face.
“The emerald collection is our highest category.””
“I’m aware.””
She smiled.
“Of course.””
That one word carried an entire insult.
I ignored it.
“I’m interested in the green emerald gown displayed near the private fitting rooms.””
She hesitated.
Most customers probably never asked for that dress. It was a masterpiece created for the company’s anniversary collection. The fabric was imported, the emerald details were handcrafted, and only a few people in the world had ever been allowed to try it.
“I can bring it out,” she said.
A few minutes later, she returned carrying the dress.
But something was wrong.
I noticed it immediately.
The left side seam was slightly uneven.
There was a small tear near the inner lining.
I touched the fabric carefully.
“Was this already damaged?””
Chloe looked surprised.
“Excuse me?””
“The dress,” I said.
“There’s a tear here.””
She looked at it for a second.
Then she smiled.
A strange, cold smile.
“I’m sorry, but it wasn’t damaged when I gave it to you.””
I looked at her.
“I haven’t even tried it on yet.””
She shrugged.
“Maybe you pulled it too hard.””
I stared at her.
“You handed me the dress less than a minute ago.””
“Of course you’d say that.””
The way she said it made my stomach tighten.
Not because I was angry.
Because I recognized that attitude.
She had already decided who I was.
Someone she could blame.
Someone she could embarrass.
I calmly explained, “The dress was already torn when you handed it to me. You can check the security footage.””
Instead of answering, Chloe looked toward the guard.
Then she looked back at my clothes.
And smiled.
“Someone like you will probably have to sell everything you own just to pay for it.””
The words hung in the air.
A few customers gasped quietly.
I looked at her for a long moment.
I could have told her exactly who I was.
I could have explained that my father founded the company that owned this boutique.
I could have reminded her that every employee in this building had signed paperwork with my family’s name on it.
But I didn’t.
People reveal themselves when they think they have power over you.
So I simply said, “Let me go.””
The guard hesitated.
Chloe raised her voice.
“Don’t listen to her. She’s trying to leave before taking responsibility.””
“I’m not leaving,” I replied.
“I’m waiting for the truth.””
She laughed.
“The truth?””
“Yes.””
“And what is that?””
I looked directly at her.
“That you’re accusing the wrong person.””
She rolled her eyes.
Then Daniel appeared.
The manager’s face was completely pale.
“Release her. NOW.””
The guard immediately stepped away.
Chloe turned toward him.
