Walter's expression closed.
“I was a lot of things.”
“Military?”
Silence.
Marcus knew.
Walter eventually said:
“Yes.”
“Special operations?”
Walter looked at him.
“That's enough.”
Marcus nodded.
“All right.”
He started walking away.
Walter called after him.
“Marcus.”
He turned.
“Don't dig into my past.”
“Why?”
“Because some things are better left buried.”
Marcus nodded.
But he didn't promise.
That night, he searched Walter Bell's name.
Nothing.
Then he searched variations.
Walter Bell.
Walter James Bell.
W. J. Bell.
Still almost nothing.
Then Marcus tried an old combat sports database.
One result appeared.
A scanned article from thirty-one years earlier.
The headline read:
INTERNATIONAL DEFENSE COMBAT SEMINAR ENDS IN UNEXPECTED VICTORY.
Marcus opened it.
The photograph was grainy.
But the man in the photograph had the same eyes.
Younger.
Much younger.
Standing on a mat in a foreign military training facility.
The caption read:
Instructor William “Walter” Bell demonstrates controlled close-quarters defense during joint training exercise.
Marcus stared.
He read the article twice.
Then a third time.
Walter Bell had not merely trained in martial arts.
He had been an instructor.
An instructor for military personnel.
Marcus closed the laptop.
He suddenly understood the tremor.
The bent back.
The quiet voice.
The refusal to discuss the past.
Walter wasn't weak.
He was hiding how strong he had once been.
And perhaps more importantly—
why he had stopped.
Dylan Wants Revenge
Dylan arrived at Eastbrook the following Saturday with three friends.
They weren't there to train.
They were there to provoke Walter.
Walter was replacing fluorescent bulbs in the hallway.
Dylan leaned against the wall.
“Morning, Mr. Bell.”
Walter looked down from the ladder.
“Morning.”
“You've been avoiding me.”
“No.”
“I asked Coach to arrange another demonstration.”
Walter climbed down.
“I already said no.”
Dylan smiled.
“You afraid?”
Walter carried the ladder toward the storage room.
“No.”
“Then prove it.”
Walter kept walking.
Dylan followed.
“You embarrassed me in front of everyone.”
Walter stopped.
