His attorneys attacked witnesses.
Challenged searches.
Called Eddie a liar.
Called Steven an addict.
Suggested Marcy’s abuse allegations were being weaponized by law enforcement to create leverage against Victor.
Some arguments failed.
Some created delays.
Eventually, financial records became more powerful than personalities.
Debt acquisitions.
Cash deposits.
Shell companies.
Trucking records.
Payments to Collins.
Messages instructing employees to pressure borrowers.
Victor ultimately accepted a plea covering racketeering-related, financial, and obstruction offenses rather than face every count at trial.
Not every rumor about him was proven.
That mattered to me.
For months, I wanted every terrible story to be true because hatred likes simple villains.
The justice system had to care about proof more than my anger did.
Victor received a long sentence.
Shoreline Commercial entered court-supervised restructuring.
Our business loan was sold to a legitimate lender.
I kept the workshop.
We did not get it for free.
I still owed money.
That felt right.
Steven Lane came to see me after his own case resolved.
He stood inside the shop where he had worked for eight years.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at him.
“For which part?”
His eyes filled.
“Selling your information.”
“Good start.”
“I thought they only wanted business leads.”
“Then?”
“Then I knew.”
“And kept helping.”
“Yes.”
He did not make excuses.
That mattered.
“I was scared.”
“I believe you.”
“I have a gambling problem.”
“I know.”
“I’m getting treatment.”
“Good.”
“Can you forgive me?”
I thought about it.
“Eventually, maybe.”
He nodded.
“Can I come back to work?”
“No.”
His face fell.
“Forgiveness isn’t rehiring.”
He almost smiled.
“Fair.”
We shook hands.
That was the last time I saw him.
Eddie’s ending surprised me more.
After recovering from the beating, he closed Rourke Combat Academy.
For years he had helped create the culture around Dustin.
He laughed at intimidation.
Encouraged fighters to treat fear like weakness.
Ignored things he should have questioned.
He came to my workshop one afternoon.
“I owe you an apology.”
“You shoved me twice.”
“That too.”
I raised an eyebrow.
He looked uncomfortable.
“I knew Dustin was rough with women.”
My expression changed.
“How much did you know?”
“Not enough.”
“That answer sounds convenient.”
“It is.”
At least he admitted it.
“I saw things. Heard things. Told myself relationships weren’t my business.”
I set down the piece of wood in my hands.
“Then you made it your business when you helped surround me.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
“What do you want?”
“To start another gym.”
I almost laughed.
“Why tell me?”
“Because I want it different.”
“Then make it different.”
“I want you to teach there.”
“No.”
His face fell.
Then I continued.
“But I know somebody who might help you design policies for handling abuse complaints.”
He stared.
“Who?”
“Marcy.”
That evening I told her.
She surprised me.
“I’ll talk to him.”
“Why?”
“Because fighters need to know being tough doesn’t mean protecting the guy who hurts people.”
