"What did he say?"

My mother looked away.

"He told her to call Bell."

That was the moment the case changed.

This wasn't a family argument.

Someone had been trying to take my mother's house.

And someone inside law enforcement had been prepared to help them.

Chapter 4 — The House Was Worth More Than We Knew

Nora requested the property records.

The house was worth approximately $280,000.

But the land beneath it was worth far more.

A development company had purchased nearly every surrounding property.

They were planning a commercial project.

My mother's house was the last parcel blocking the access road.

The strange paperwork.

The pressure.

The accusation.

The police involvement.

They didn't simply want my mother declared incompetent.

Another silence.

"She was injured."

"She attacked Rachel."

"Don't lie to me."

"Daniel—"

"You knew."

"I was trying to protect her."

"From what?"

"From herself."

I laughed bitterly.

"You really believe that?"

He lowered his voice.

"She can't manage the property anymore."

"Who told you that?"

He didn't answer.

I already knew.

The developer.

Someone had convinced my brother that selling the property was inevitable.

All he had to do was make sure our mother couldn't stop it.

And he had chosen money over family.

Chapter 5 — The Missing Evidence

Nora's investigation uncovered something disturbing.

The original 911 call had been altered.

The first version recorded Rachel saying:
