Sarah reached out, her fingers catching the fabric of my sleeve again, but her grip lacked the iron certainty she'd had two minutes ago. Her knuckles were white, and her eyes kept flickering toward the forward galley bulkhead where the flight deck door handle was beginning to turn.

"Sir," a new voice broke in from behind us. It was the lead gate agent, breathless and sweating, squeezing past the galley curtain with a yellow paper slip clutched in his hand. "We have a system flag on this departure. The manifest didn't clear the transfer protocol."

I didn't turn around. I kept my eyes locked on Sarah’s face as the gate agent stepped into the aisle between us, holding up the printed audit trail with its bold red error code glowing under the cabin lights.

In seat 1A, Karen turned her head slowly away from the window. Her fingers uncurled from the armrest, her manicured nails pressing flat against the smooth leather.

"I am a regional director for Atlanta Air Group," Karen said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register that cut through the low thrum of the auxiliary power unit. "That seat was confirmed through corporate travel services three days ago. If your ground staff failed to clear the manifest before boarding started, that is an internal operational failure between ticketing and dispatch. It is not my problem, and it certainly is not this passenger's concern."

"It's a federal transport manifest violation," I said, leaning closer until the edge of my ID badge hovered inches from her elbow. "When you generate a manual override for a corporate transfer using a gate agent's crew login without a supervisor sign-off, you void the chain of custody for a refrigerated biological transport. The hospital logs record every unauthorized access attempt against a priority medical payload. Your corporate voucher didn't just bump a passenger; it broke the seal on a scheduled organ transport run."

Sarah let go of my sleeve entirely. Her hand dropped to her side, her fingers twitching against the seam of her trousers as she stared at the yellow slip in the gate agent's hand.

"I didn't break any seal," Sarah muttered, her voice cracking slightly on the last syllable. "The supervisor at the podium told me to clear the block. She said the corporate executive had priority due to regional scheduling."

"What supervisor?" the gate agent asked, his eyes narrowing as he tapped the yellow paper slip with his thumb. "The podium supervisor left for the shift change at five o'clock. Station terminal four has been locked since four-forty-five. The only active login on that terminal during the pre-boarding window was crew ID 4819."

The silence in the forward cabin grew tight and heavy, broken only by the steady whine of the jet engines spooling up for the pushback sequence. In row 3, the man lowered his newspaper completely, leaning forward to catch the exchange. Two rows back, an older woman pulled her rolling bag slightly further into the aisle as if preparing to stand.

Karen’s gaze flicked from the gate agent to Sarah, her expression hardening into a cold, transactional mask.
