No one breathed.

No one moved.

Ronan slowly lowered the letter and looked around at the men who had shared his table, his road, his grief for seven years.

Mack’s eyes were wide with disbelief.

Luis looked sick.

Dean had gone pale as bone.

Elias was staring at Jonah’s body like the dead might still sit up and explain it all.

Ember stood in the doorway clutching the blanket around her shoulders, too small for the storm she had delivered.

Ronan walked to the duffel bag and unzipped it.

Inside was a weatherproof ledger, a handgun wrapped in cloth, and beneath them both—a sealed photograph.

He pulled the photograph free and turned it over.

On the back, in Jonah’s hand, were four words:

The traitor is in—

A gun clicked behind him.

Every muscle in Ronan’s body locked.

Then a voice he had trusted for decades said, almost gently,

“Don’t turn around.”

And in that single terrible moment, with Jonah dead, Ember trembling in the doorway, and one of his brothers aiming at his back, Ronan realized the worst part of losing a man wasn’t burying him.

It was discovering he had been trying to save you all along.
