"I loved you!" Victoria sobbed, her makeup running down her face in dark streaks. She threw herself forward, falling to her knees and gripping Marcus's legs. "I did it for us, Marcus! Elena was nothing! She was just a servant! She didn't belong in our world! I belong with you!"
Marcus looked down at the woman he had married less than two hours ago. His expression was completely hollow.
"The marriage certificate hasn't been filed with the state yet," Marcus said coldly. "We aren't married."
Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer panic. She looked at the pawn ticket in Marcus's hand—the single piece of evidence that proved everything. If she could destroy it, it would just be her word against a seven-year-old orphan's.
With a feral, guttural scream, Victoria lunged upward, her perfectly manicured hands clawing desperately for the yellowed paper.
Chapter 3: The Reversal
Victoria’s sudden violence took the room by surprise, but Marcus had spent the last three years in boardrooms with predators; his reflexes were sharp. He pulled the pawn ticket back just as Victoria’s nails raked across his wrist, drawing a thin line of blood.
Before she could strike again, the two security guards—now taking their orders exclusively from Marcus—slammed into her.
They grabbed Victoria by the arms, dragging her back. Victoria thrashed wildly, kicking her heels against the marble floor. The heavy silk train of her custom wedding gown tore with a loud, sickening rip under the guards' boots. Her diamond tiara dislodged, sending her perfect updo tumbling down around her shoulders in a tangled, frantic mess.
"Let me go!" Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I am Mrs. Vance! You work for me! Let me go!"
"Keep her restrained," Marcus ordered, turning his back on her completely. He looked toward his head of security, who was already speaking urgently into an earpiece. "Lock the ballroom doors. Call the police. Have them send a detective, not just a patrol car. Tell them we have a confession for grand larceny and felony assault."
"Marcus, please!" Victoria begged, dropping the anger and reverting to desperate, hyperventilating sobs as the guards forced her to her knees. "Don't do this! Think of the scandal! Think of what the papers will say!"
The wealthy crowd around them had already delivered their verdict. A few women turned their backs, walking toward the exit. Others continued to film, their faces twisted in sneers of disgust. Victoria had spent three years clawing her way to the absolute peak of the city's social ladder, and in less than five minutes, she had plummeted straight to the bottom. The high society she worshipped was now watching her unravel like a common criminal.
"The scandal?" Eleanor Vance said, stepping forward. The elderly matriarch looked down at Victoria with eyes like chipped ice. "The scandal is that I allowed a thief to wear my diamonds for even an hour. Guards, take that necklace off her. It belongs to my family."
"No!" Victoria cried as one of the guards reached for the clasp at the back of her neck. "It was a gift! It's mine!"
The guard unhooked the heavy diamond necklace, letting it slide from her collarbones, and handed it to Eleanor. Stripped of the jewels, her dress torn, her hair ruined, Victoria was finally exposed for exactly what she was.
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as they approached the luxury hotel.
Marcus didn't wait for the police to enter the ballroom. He left his head of security to hand Victoria and the pawn ticket over to the authorities. Instead, he turned all his attention to the little girl standing quietly in the center of the chaos.
Maya was trembling, her eyes wide as she watched the flashing red and blue lights reflect against the ballroom windows.
Marcus knelt down on the marble floor again, uncaring that his expensive tuxedo trousers were getting dirty. He picked up the gold beaded clutch from where it had fallen during the struggle, snapped it shut, and held it out to Maya.
"You were very brave tonight, Maya," Marcus said gently. "Braver than I was three years ago."
Maya took the bag, clutching it tightly to her chest. "Are they going to put her in jail?"
