Shelter in the Marble Lobby

A punishing winter squall battered the revolving glass doors of the Grand Carlyle, glazing the avenue in sheets of ice and sleet. Inside, the hotel's palatial lobby offered a cathedral of warmth: polished Carrara marble floor tiles reflected soaring crystal chandeliers, and the scent of expensive mahogany and fresh white lilies filled the air.

Standing behind the curved dark-wood concierge counter was Julian, the general manager. Impeccably groomed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, silk tie, and polished oxfords, Julian ran the five-star flagship with unbending arrogance. He viewed the luxury hotel not merely as a business, but as a sanctuary reserved strictly for old money, diplomats, and socialites.

That manufactured illusion shattered when a cold gust sneaked past the revolving entrance.

Shuffling slowly across the gleaming floor was an old man in desperate need of refuge. His maroon overcoat was soaked through, frayed at the hem, and stained with road slush. Beneath his unkempt grey hair, his pale face bore the exhaustion of a man who had walked miles in freezing wind. He carried a battered leather satchel in one hand, while his boots squeaked against the polished floor, leaving small puddles of muddy water in his wake.

He approached the polished counter, his voice trembling from the deep chill in his bones.

"Sir... could I please stay here until the rain stops?"

Julian didn't even look at the man's eyes. His gaze dropped to the puddle forming near the counter, and his mouth twisted in disgust. He leaned forward, keeping his hands safely off the counter so as not to touch the wet wood.
