He turned around and walked back toward the doorway, stopping directly in front of Evelyn. She shrank back against the wall, her eyes wide, realizing that for the first time in her life, her lies were completely powerless.
“You thought you could come into my home,” Marcus said, his voice vibrating with restrained fury. “You thought you could use my daughter’s life as a payout. You thought you could frame the only person in this house who actually protects her.”
“Marcus, please, I love you—”
“Officer,” Marcus said, not breaking eye contact with the woman shrinking before him.
The two officers stepped into the room. One of them grabbed Evelyn’s wrist, yanking it behind her back.
“Evelyn Sterling, you are under arrest for attempted murder, assault on a minor, and fraud,” the officer stated clearly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
“No! No, you can’t do this!” Evelyn shrieked, dropping her elegant facade completely. She fought against the officers, kicking and thrashing as the cuffs ratcheted tightly around her wrists. “I’m your wife! Marcus! I’m your wife!”
“Not anymore,” Marcus said coldly. “Get her out of my house.”
I stood by the wall, holding my injured shoulder, and watched as Evelyn was dragged down the hallway, her shrieks echoing off the marble floors until the heavy front doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice completely.
The penthouse fell back into silence.
Tom let out a long breath, keying his radio to clear the rest of the security team.
Marcus turned back to me. All the anger bled out of his posture, leaving him looking exhausted but deeply grateful.
From down the hall, I heard the light, rapid patter of small footsteps.
“Maya!”
Chloe came running through the door. She didn’t run to her father—she ran straight to me, wrapping her arms around my legs and burying her face against my good side.
I dropped to my knees, wincing through the pain in my collarbone, and wrapped my good arm around her, kissing the top of her curls.
“I’m here, bug,” I whispered, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. “I’m right here. You’re safe.”
Marcus crouched down beside us on the nursery floor. He gently reached out and touched the uninjured side of my face, his eyes filled with immense respect.
“I didn’t believe her, Maya,” he said softly. “The moment I walked in and saw you bleeding to cover my daughter, I knew she was lying. But you didn’t just protect Chloe. You gave me the proof I need to make sure Evelyn never sees the outside of a prison cell.”
I looked at him, wiping a tear from my cheek. “I promised Sarah I’d look after her,” I said.
“You did more than that,” Marcus said. “You saved our family.”
He leaned in and wrapped his arms around both of us, pulling us into a tight, protective embrace. The coldness of the penthouse seemed to fade, replaced by the warmth of a father holding his child, and the quiet dignity of a promise finally fulfilled. We sat there together on the nursery floor, the nightmare over, knowing that from this moment on, no one would ever touch this little girl again.
