Alicia had seen enough of people to know that confidence often arrived before accuracy.

That did not mean she intended to answer shouting with shouting.

She kept still.

The clipboard lay on the patio between the lounger and the pool, but it no longer seemed like an object of authority. It was a board with wet corners, loose paper, and a metal clip reflecting the sun.

Karen looked at it once more.

Alicia wondered whether the woman recognized the change.

The board had entered the yard as part of a performance.

Now it was simply something she had dropped.

Beyond the fence, the garden noises had stopped.

Alicia heard a faint movement near the side of the house.

Then footsteps.

Hurried.

Approaching from the direction of the street.

Karen heard them too.

Her chin lifted.

Alicia’s eyes moved toward the gate.

For a second, she could see only the open panel and the bright strip of passage behind it. Then a shadow crossed the paving.

A security guard entered.

He came through quickly, his attention already directed toward the pool. There was urgency in his movement, the kind that suggested he had responded to a disturbance rather than wandered over out of curiosity.

He stopped when he saw Alicia.

The pause was unmistakable.

It lasted no more than a beat, but it changed his face.

His gaze held on her.

Then it moved sharply toward Karen in the water.

Alicia watched him take in the scene.

The open gate.

The clipboard on the patio.

The woman gripping the edge.

The distance between them.

She did not speak.

The guard’s name badge caught a little light, but from where Karen floated, it offered nothing useful to read.

Karen looked from him to Alicia.

Her mouth opened.

The expression was familiar now.

Outrage gathering itself for an audience.

Alicia could see the accusation forming before a word came out.

She also saw the guard move.

Directly toward her.

Not toward Karen’s clipboard.

Not toward the woman pointing from the pool.

Toward Alicia.

Karen’s mouth remained open for a second.

Then the accusation faltered.

The guard’s attention had not gone where she expected it to go.

His arrival had been the moment she could regain control of the scene.

Instead, it introduced something she did not understand.

Alicia stood beside the lounger with water drying on her skin and her sunglasses resting where she had placed them. She did not move to meet him or make a gesture that would explain the recognition.

She simply watched him approach.

Karen’s eyes followed.

The woman’s anger was still there, but something had entered beneath it.

Uncertainty.

It showed in the way her fingers tightened on the pool edge and in the small movement of her gaze toward Alicia’s face, searching once more for a detail she had missed.

The guard slowed as he reached the patio beside the lounger.

Karen drew a breath.

Alicia’s expression remained unwavering.

For the first time that afternoon, the HOA president seemed unable to decide what she should say.

And before the guard spoke, the only sound between them was water dripping from Karen’s floral blouse back into the pool.
