The nervous man with the clipboard had returned with her. This time, he refused to look me in the eye.

Across the street, two neighbors stood in their driveways pretending they weren't watching.

Mercer stepped closer.

""Pay the fine. Remove the swing. Quit causing problems.""

""Or what?""

He smiled.

""We remove the problem.""

That was when I noticed the body camera.

Red light blinking.

I asked him a single question.

""Are you currently presenting yourself as a sworn law-enforcement officer?""

Gloria's smile vanished.

Mercer's hand moved onto the grip of his gun.

""You looking for trouble?""

""I'm asking who commissioned you.""

Gloria snapped, ""Detain him.""

That was the moment everything changed.

Mercer seized my arm.

I instinctively pulled free, taking only one step, careful not to escalate anything with Lily standing behind me on the porch.

His handgun came out.

The muzzle slammed into my ribs.

Lily gasped.

She was still holding the pitcher of lemonade she'd brought outside for me.

Mercer leaned close enough for me to smell mint gum on his breath.

""Take another step, hero, and your daughter watches you fall.""

Gloria crossed her arms.

""Maybe next time you'll learn to follow community rules.""

Nobody moved.

Not the neighbors.

Not the board members.

Not the nervous man carrying the clipboard.

I kept both hands where everyone could see them.

""Lily,"" I said softly, ""set the pitcher down.""

""Dad—""

""It's okay. Put it down.""

The glass pitcher touched the wooden porch with a quiet click.

Mercer pressed the muzzle more firmly against my side.

""Wallet. Slowly. I want to see identification.""

That was his mistake.

I looked toward Gloria.
