“Dad?”
“Where did you get that?”
Evelyn’s voice changed.
Not louder.
Not colder.
Just stripped of the softness she had used while pretending to be invisible.
“From your wife.”
I crossed the distance between us before I realized I had moved.
My hand closed around Evelyn’s wrist.
“You never met Sofia.”
“Yes, I did.”
“She died seven years ago.”
“I know.”
There were two kinds of people who spoke calmly when I held them like that. Fools and dangerous people.
Evelyn Shaw was not a fool.
“Dad,” Grace whispered.
I released Evelyn.
“Explain.”
Evelyn looked toward the cellar door.
“Not with your men listening.”
“They’re loyal.”
“That is exactly what Sofia thought.”
I felt something ugly twist inside my chest.
