“Read the gate log, Director,” I said. “Midnight release. Terminal Gate Two. Bypass authorization: DVANCE_AUDIT. Uploaded certification document: INSPECTION_CERT_4409B. PDF. That license number is registered to Arthur Miller with the Indiana State Fire Marshal. If that tank splits in the ditch outside LaPorte, your corporate office has my name on the bill of lading, while Dennis has his consulting fee in his briefcase and Finch goes through the windshield in an atomized fireball. ”

Anderson leaned over the table, picked up the thermal receipt, and brought it close to his eyes. His jaw set hard, the muscles along his neck bunching into tight cords. He looked down at the paper, then looked at Cole.

“Marcus,” Anderson said, his voice deadly quiet. “Did you authorize this administrative override token? ”

Cole’s mouth worked, but no sound came out for three full seconds. His collar looked two sizes too small, his throat bulging against the button. “Director... Dennis explained that the third-party audit had verified the hydraulic integrity through secondary testing... he told me the physical inspection was merely a procedural formality that had already been executed before Arthur’s division was reorganized... ”

“The physical inspection requires a certified technician’s signature in ink, Marcus,” Anderson said, the paper trembling slightly in his grip. “You know that. Every terminal manager in this state knows that. You bypassed a Category A mechanical red-tag on an eighty-thousand-pound hazardous transport without an in-person wet-pressure certification. ”

“Director Anderson, please, look at the legal structure,” Vance said, stepping forward with his hands raised, his eyes shifting erratically between Anderson and the door. “Blackwood Hauling’s master services contract explicitly indemnifies third-party efficiency analysts against operational liability during transitional operational phases. The regulatory responsibility remains entirely with the primary operating carrier. If Mr. Miller's credentials were used, it was under the standard corporate assignment clause outlined in Section Four of—”

“Shut your mouth, Dennis,” Anderson whispered.

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Anderson turned to the credenza behind him. He reached down to the black metal auxiliary radio console that Vance had wired into the projection system, grabbed the heavy plastic microphone off its bracket, and flipped the red toggle switch on the front panel from MONITOR to TRANSMIT.

A high-pitched tone squealed through the conference room’s surround-sound ceiling speakers, echoing down the executive hallway.

“Base station to Rig 414,” Anderson said into the microphone, his knuckles whitening on the grip. “Finch, this is Director Anderson in the main conference room. Respond immediately. Over. ”

The ceiling speakers crackled with empty, frying static. For four seconds, nothing came through but the raw hiss of open airwaves bouncing off the low clouds over the marsh bottoms.

Then, buried beneath the engine roar of an eighteen-wheeler pulling fifty tons of weight at highway speed, Finch’s voice cut through the static, strained and shouting over the cab rattle:

“This is Unit 414! Who is this on the company line? I’ve got my mirrors shaking off the brackets down here on County 400! Base, my cab pressure gauge just pegged past the red stop on the dash! It’s screaming like an air drill under my sleeper berth! ”

Anderson looked up at me. His face had completely drained of color. “Arthur. What does he do? ”

I stepped around the table, reached past Anderson’s arm, and pressed the thumb button on the microphone.

“Finch, this is Arthur Miller,” I said, keeping my voice low, deliberate, and clear, using the same gravelly rhythm I had used for twenty years across the shop floor. “Listen to me right now. Do not touch your trailer air brakes. I repeat: do not grab the trolley valve. If you lock those trailer shoes, the torque will rip the secondary manifold off the tank belly before you stop. ”

“Arthur? ” Finch’s voice was wild with terror, breathing ragged into the cab mic. “Arthur, the cab smells like rotten eggs! The whole bottom of the trailer is fogging white in my right mirror! It’s venting liquid across the rear tires! ”

“The seat has cracked, Finch,” I said, looking Vance dead in his widening eyes. “The bypass flange is blowing. You are two miles from the Norfolk Southern rail crossing. Take your foot off the accelerator. Do not downshift. Let the tractor coast down on its engine compression. Steer the rig onto the grass shoulder on the north side of the grade, away from the ditch culvert. As soon as the wheels stop turning, cut the master electrical disconnect on the floorboard, kick your driver’s door open, and run north into the standing corn. Do not look back for your logbook. Do not touch your radio. Run three hundred yards upwind into the dirt and stay down. ”

“Arthur, the rail signals are flashing ahead of me! There’s an empty grain train coming through the cut! ”

“Get off the blacktop now, Finch! ” I shouted into the mic. “North shoulder! Cut the master switch! ”
