Walter wasn't interested in charity that made people feel small.
He wanted people to feel capable.
One afternoon, Jake asked:
"Why don't you just give everyone money?"
Walter looked at him.
"Because sometimes money solves the problem."
"And sometimes?"
"It hides it."
Jake thought about that.
Walter continued.
"If someone needs food, feed them. If someone needs a job, help them find one. If someone needs education, open the door."
"What if they need all three?"
"Then we start with one."
Jake smiled.
"Which one?"
"Whichever keeps them alive long enough to reach the others."
Months passed.
Jake became known throughout the foundation.
He remembered names.
He listened.
He didn't judge.
But he also learned something important.
Helping people didn't mean destroying yourself.
Walter taught him to create boundaries.
"Generosity without wisdom can become another kind of damage," Walter told him.
Jake never forgot it.
Chapter 7 — The Man Who Came Back
One winter morning, Walter collapsed.
Jake found him in the foundation office.
He called an ambulance.
At the hospital, doctors discovered that Walter had a serious heart condition.
Jake sat beside his bed.
"You scared me."
Walter smiled weakly.
"I'm old."
"That's not funny."
"No."
Jake looked down.
"I still haven't forgiven you."
"For what?"
"For making me think you needed me."
Walter closed his eyes.
"I did need you."
Jake looked at him.
"Not for money."
"No."
Walter reached for his hand.
"I needed proof that kindness still existed."
Jake swallowed hard.
"Why me?"
"Because you reminded me of my son."
Jake didn't know what to say.
Walter continued.
"He used to believe people were mostly good."
"What happened?"
"I taught him to be suspicious."
Walter looked away.
