“She didn't leave.”
“What happened?”
“My grandfather locked her away.”
“Why?”
“She discovered what he was doing.”
“What?”
Eleanor looked at me.
“He was stealing identities.”
I didn't understand.
She explained.
Her grandfather had been involved in a network that created false identities for people who wanted to disappear.
The hidden room beneath the house had been used as a temporary holding area.
People were brought there.
Documents were changed.
Names were erased.
Some were eventually released.
Others disappeared permanently.
Her grandmother discovered everything.
She tried to expose him.
Instead, he locked her inside the hidden room.
“She died there,” Eleanor whispered.
I felt sick.
“How do you know?”
“My grandmother left evidence.”
“Where?”
Eleanor looked toward the house.
“In the room.”
I understood.
The window I had been painting wasn't just a window.
It was the only visible opening to the hidden room.
But there was more.
Eleanor's grandfather had never acted alone.
Several influential people had used the network.
Politicians.
Business owners.
People who could make problems disappear.
The records had been deliberately erased.
And Eleanor had spent years protecting the secret because she believed revealing it would put her family in danger.
“Then why destroy my paintings?”
She looked at me.
“Because your paintings were showing things that cameras couldn't.”
“What things?”
“Details.”
She explained that the hidden room had been sealed decades ago.
No one could see inside.
But the angle of my paintings revealed architectural details that proved the room existed.
The paintings were becoming evidence.
I asked her one question.
“Why didn't you simply tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of who?”
She looked toward the window.
“Someone is still protecting that secret.”
Before I could answer, the lights went out.
A car engine started outside.
Eleanor grabbed my arm.
“Don't go near the window.”
A shadow moved across the street.
Then there was a loud crash.
My studio window shattered.
We dropped to the floor.
A bullet had struck the wall above us.
The police arrived twelve minutes later.
The shooter was gone.
But now everything changed.
Eleanor finally agreed to tell investigators everything.
She gave them the old documents.
The names.
The hidden accounts.
The locations.
And, most importantly, the location of the concealed room.
The next morning, investigators entered the Voss property.
They found the hidden room.
Behind a false wall.
